It pays more than some things but there are other things that pay much more than LTL. Anybody can hold a steering wheel for 600 miles. My ex wife was a prime example. She was unable to back a trailer into a door unless she had a couple acres of asphalt in front of the door. LTL requires more skill in backing. And you spend more time In city conditions more likely to have an accident and you have to navigate smaller streets which requires more skill than driving down the interstate holding the steering wheel.
Why does LTL pay more?

Time sensitive and night driving. They need better drivers due to the time issue - to attract better drivers they need better pay.
Teamsters didn't do squat. Oh yeah, how long until they bankrupt YRC again? -
How did the Teamsters not play a role in it? Not sure how YRC's insolvency plays a role in why LTL jobs pay better, you lost meToomanybikes Thanks this.

Oh yeh that make sense, no one drives truckload a night and who cares when the truckload shipment arrives.Raiderfanatic Thanks this.

You tell me how they played a role in it. Theres many extremely successful LTL companies that are not unionized. The unions did nothing but negotiate saftey issues back when they were a thing. Negotiating pay and benefits was icing on the cake that is dead now - see YRC lost their pension thanks to the greedy teamsters who would not negotiate with the company. They're on fast track to bankrupt yet another company.

I can sit here and quote statistics, or you can look them up, but one only has to look at the wages, from let's say 1977-1987, to understand how TL wages plummeted and LTL wages, ie unionized, hardly at all in comparision.
Is the Teamsters union an empty shell and a far cry from what it was, yeah probably, but you are arguing with yourself on that one, as nobody is claiming otherwise.Toomanybikes and Pintlehook Thank this. -
Not all teamster pensions run through the central states like YRC. That's their problem. Not mine...
