There's also alot less competition in LTL vs TL because of the huge barriers of entry. You need terminals in every major city, breakbulks, specialized equipment like liftgates, towmotors, converter dollies, pup trailers, offer freeze protection, guaranteed service, etc.
Problem with rates in truckload is that nearly anyone who can scrape together a few thousand dollars for a truck and get their authority is a potential competitor. When times are good, lots of people throw their hat in the ring to chase the high rates. When times are bad, there's too many trucks chasing too little freight and the rates go down the tubes. -
Why? City P&D is basically all daylight hours on the clock, paid well. Nighttime linehaul drivers just have to be disciplined about their sleep schedule, and are paid VERY well. But OTR truckload is far worse in my opinion, because there is no predictability or regular schedule to it if you expect to make any money.

Weird how a majority of people think all Teamsters belong to one pension fund. I am a Teamster and our company has never had a pension, they fund our 401K's.

Probably because of the incredible number of people affected by that unsustainable, failing plan. Sad situation for so many.

they dont care how much sleep u *actually* get or how long it takes u to get to the hotel as long as ur back after ur 10. 1 time my terminal manager wanted me to drive with less than 2 hours sleep and try as i might, with every trick i knew, i just couldnt "flip the switch" so to speak and fall asleep. of course i said no way. constant sleep deprivation and worse, sleep debt. 1 time on my way home i was almost to a light. all of a sudden i wake up to horns and a red light, i had fallen asleep and gone thru it. never again will i do linehaul. ironically, i drive intermodal now for JB hunt and mainly drive at night. BUT, i can set my start time and get as much sleep as i need and havent had any problems, and im making almost as much as i was doing linehaul. ive been around and so far jb hunt and then us xpress have been the best experiences ive had

Not all companies. Especially if you cite it as a safety issue. But I hear you. I was just saying that LTL is more than extraboard night linehaul and staying in hotels all week.Marky84 Thanks this.

I do ltl reefer and it pays more cause you run a tight schedule and unload the product yourself plus I breakdown the pallets equals more money and less miles.

ahhh ok. lol. well i was doing linehaul for saia and i was lucky to have runs where i was usually home every night. but at USF Holland and Saia, where i had the incident with my TM, i was getting no sleep so i had to take naps in the truck. then i started getting in trouble for the naps. go figure eh?

I hauled LTL as a line driver pulling triples. I worked there for 6 months until my gasoline job came open. But I would say the better paying LTL jobs are union. I worked pulling trips in the early 90's and was paid 27½ cents per mile. I would only get 400 miles a night and have 2 stops. You always had to wait for your load to be loaded at night so that was a pain. Lets just say this LTL company in Las Vegas was the worse company I ever worked for.
