I called on a custom golf cart going from Jacksonville, FL to Shelbyville, TN. It paid $400, I called and said I'd do it for $500. The guy I called had the owner call me direct, told him the same thing, AND he wanted it by Christmas, which I would of done. He told me he'd only pay $400 or he could do it himself, I said "So you are going to drive almost 1100 miles in 2 days for $400?" He didn't call back and I could care less.

LMFAO!! The only thing about these guys is that as much as you wanna call back in a week and ask "so how'd that run work out for you" that'd be in bad taste. But you KNOW it never worked out as their egos on the phone allowed.....

Well, I wound up hauling the F-550, and the boat for this guy. He decided that he couldn't get it hauled any cheaper. None of the big guy companies would even consider loading the F-550, and you need a winch to load the boat, which I have mounted to my truck. I'm sitting at home now, with his money in my pocket. I just love it when these guys find out that they aren't as smart as they think they are. Next time I haul for him, and I haul a lot of boats, and smaller camp trailers for him, He'll not complain about the price. Before I unloaded this morning, I took him by the arm, walked across the street, and asked him, " What do you see on my trailer, and how much room is left on the deck?" He replied " Oh, maybe a foot, maybe 16 inches." I said< "oh the whole trailer is full then, right?", and He said, "Ya, it is." I said, "Is it right for you to expect me to haul this for about 1/3rd of what I could make hauling for someone else?" If your product takes up half the trailer, you pay the going rate out of that area for half the trailer, so a 20ft boat, trailer and all actually takes up 25 or 26 ft of deck space, or about half the trailer. Cars are paying 450. out of Vegas to Boise, or 900. for the boat. I got paid, and think I may have opened his eyes a little. Merry Christmas everyone!

Im wondering if a person can make it with a medium duty truck like a International with that DT466 engine and a 53 ft wedge trailer hauling 4 cars? Im thinking the overhead will be a whole lot cheaper and therfore you dont hav to make as much to get by(???) Your thoughts on this?

You will get better fuel mileage with that type of set up. You can do decent numbers but you need to chase the big vehicles that regular haulers can't or don't want to take. Like the full size vans. Sprinters. Hummer types

    James Burris Thanks this.

Medium duty trucks suck power and fuel mileage wise, just go with a class 8 if your going to gross over 26k.

I dont really like that mercedes engine but they will get 9 mpg and will be able to handle 3 or 4 cars with no problem any more weight and they will struggle so i did think about getting a single axel big truck with that engine if i didnt go with a medium duty truck...

The truck overhead might be a little cheaper, but it's the insurance that's the killer, especially for new haulers.

That's a niche market, and unless you've got a good lane to run, you'll be stuck hauling $.30/mile IAA wrecks.
