So following that logic, a clutch should never fail, a manual trans should never fail? Thus then, the next time I see/hear some grizzled old timer grind a gear, I should demand he be fired? If I had a dime for every manual I hear grind, on a daily basis coming out of a truckstop, or taking off from a light, I'd be retired by now.

I've run 97,000 lbs off Eisenhower and Vail with my M-Drive Mack, trans locked in 9th gear and barely tapped the brakes. Never a problem.Brandt Thanks this.

Perfectly fine, I run I 70, I-25, I-80, I-90 with my M-Drive Mack, 315,076 miles as of today, zero issues on any type of conditions. When I'm bored in the winter, I beg my boss to find me runs on 160 and 550 so I can play on real snow and ice, not the trampled down BS on the main roads.

They are light years more durable than autos that cannot be denied. Life of a Manual exceeds 1 miles without a failure. They are unbelievable feats of design

Ok Striker if your autos are so good I challenge you. You find a TTR thread about a manual problem and I will match it with a thread about a auto problem. We’ll see who runs out of ammo first. You will not take up this challenge because you will fail miserably and prove my point.
Go aheadBean Jr. Thanks this. -
Give that more and more fleets, and not the mega's are going to automatics, you would be wrong. My company requires a minimum of 5 yrs exp., of our current 9 drivers, the one with the fewest years exp. has 14 yrs, the avg. is 18 yrs., 1 has 30 yrs, 1 has 25 yrs, 2 have 20 yrs. all of our trucks are M-drive Macks, with 4 Eaton autoshifts held in reserve. Mack sells 8 to 2 M-drives over manuals, and I don't see many Mega's ordering Mack's. In the Denver area, several dirt haulers have switched or are in the process of switching Mack's with M-Drives. BECO, N. Dakota based mail carrier is all M-drive Mack's or I-shift Volvo's, they have a few manuals and autoshifts floating around, but are being phased out, they turn over their trucks every 4 yrs, most with around 600K miles on them.

I counted on today’s run, and I came across 52 traffic lights and stop signs. When compared to the runs most of our trucks do, with some having as few as three stop lights on 600 mile runs due to the terminal being right by the interstate along with the plant they deliver to, and it’s statistically significant that I am beating the average in the manner I am. They drop and hook, I live unload almost all my stops. I also turn 1450 rpms to the autos 1350 rpms.Zeviander and Dave_in_AZ Thank this.

I can honestly say the only manual I have ever seen damaged was in a 386 at our company about 3 years ago. The head mechanic said the driver had come back 275 miles with the suspension dumped, and there was a hole in the side of the housing. The only issue I’ve had in my limited time with the DT12 is it glitching out sometimes and not knowing what gear it wants to choose. And I hate the high rpms it hits with the jake on, but that’s personal preference.
