I think references to the Great Depression are anectdotal at best.
Opportunities to "muscle" thru a depression are unavailable today.
You're not likely to find financing for building a house or apt building.
Banks & investors are hoarding their bucks.
There's plenty of good construction people out there already.
Your amateur construction skills won't get you very far today.
Street sweeping is performed by machine now.
Lamplighters are not in much demand now.
Don't need any blacksmiths right now..that may change soon though.
What opportunity is out there today for a semi skilled person to go for?
Semi skilled...get it? That's funny..I don't care who ya are.
How would you become the next Cinderella/Cinderfella story on Wallstreet?freightmaster Thanks this. -
I had to change and adapt my business because of the economy in CA was no longer beneficial to my dump truck business.
I've gone OTR, is it perfect? No.
But it was the best and most viable solution for my family and I.
I did not want to return to the construction biz busting my ### and having to start over again, working for a kid who had smoke blown up his ### supervising men who have worked in the biz long before he was born.
My experience in the field is worth a $100K a year superintendent job which most contractors won't pay in today's market. I know several supers who I used work with when they were foreman. They make only $40K a year and still get down and dirty with the rest of the hands. Not worth it to me and I do rather enjoy the independence that being an O/O brings.
Regardless, if one desires to make it stop believing in all of the "brick walls" will hold you back. It amazes me how many people believe the b.s. that they are only "good enough" for a certain job because they were told that b.s. their whole lives.
Basically with all of the aid that's out there in the form of student loans and grants, there is no excuse not to get an education at anytime in one's life if one needs to adapt and change.
Otherwise one can whine and moan, sit in front of the tube and get excited over an other episode of mindless TV and become slathered in the suds from cheap beer.

Awesome reply Ron Mars, This needed to be said a LONG time ago in here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -
I understand completely what you are talking about.
This country is going into the s#### real fast. And while I may seem like I don't care, because of my personal success. That couldn't be further from the truth.
I am concerned about what is happening in this country. It will affect me in the end. But, I'm also taking a pro-active approach to insure my family's survival FIRST.
If we all fail. There is no one left to pick up the pieces. Except our wonderful Goobermint. And, I will not allow myself or my family to become a victim of that. And, I will help as many as I can along the way.
But, too many people are actively looking for free help. Not trying to do for themselves, while they still can. In the end, they most likely will lose everything.
I can't help a man/woman/family who insist on trying to hang onto a $1500 a month house payment or a $600 car payment. While neglecting the fact he needs groceries on his kids table first.
A tent is shelter in a storm and you can't eat it either. But, it makes eating much easier.
In the end, those of us who were less concerned about appearances will be the ones who have to help those that were looking down their noses at us for years.
If they continue to look down their nose. They will remain where they are, for better or worse.Working Class Patriot Thanks this.
