I am not commenting on their driving ability.I am commenting on the fact most of those coming out of the mills view this as a job.Now I will concede that I do indeed intend to be compensated, but I chose(my second choice) this career because of my enjoyment of the open road and the camaraderie that used to exist.

It no longer does.I feel it is because the people that they allow out here would fail a basic aptitude test. This is but one of the reasons I advocate changing our general classification from unskilled labor to skilled. Some actual requirements for training and an investment into generally creating a more professional class of driver.

Not just some meat in the seat #### that can survive three weeks without pay and be the cheap seat of a team for two months.

Are there quality drivers joining our ranks?Absolutely, however I will submit we are getting far more that fall far below a professional.

Are these newbies the only reason for the junk broadcast on a regular basis? No they are not,but I do feel they are a significant factor.

No our industry was not perfect in the "good old days",but IMHO it was at least classier.

Another 10 year driver talking about the "good old days".
Nothing changes dude. When I started the old farts were talking that same junk about me and my peers and that was nearly three decades ago.
This generation will be talking about the old days of '09.
It's just a case of the seniors picking on the juniors. A never ending cycle.

And I wish I had a dollar for everytime I heard that story about breaking down and ten trucks would stop to help in five minutes.
I must have been in the wrong place because I swear I never saw that happen.

Between "Baba Booey" and "I ain't got no panties on" and "Shut up stupid" and who could forget "Here lizard lizard lizard" pretty much the only thing you'll hear on the cb anymore is that #### because everyone else is sick of listening to it. Especially around the truck stops.

Sunday morning in about any truck stop is the worst for me. Always seems to be at least on or two with their kickers on cussing and daring someone to come over and make them turn it off. One day in Grand Island,NE a guy did. Went over and cut the big mouths coax and beat on the door daring him to get out. He wasn't quite so tough. Police were arriving as I pulled out. It really has gotten out of control at many places.

It is funny and you are right to an extent...But, When I started out the old guys were the ones teaching you the industry and how to drive instead of some six month wonder at a CDL mill trucking company that has no idea what he's even trying to teach you and is only in it for the money anyway. I believe that is the fudamental difference.

When I started I had long hair and I caught a lot of #### over it from the "old timers". I eventually figured out what they were trying to tell me and cleaned up my look and made a good career out of it.

    Maybe...
Again...Maybe! But when you and I began this journey companies wouldn't hire some homeless bum from under a bridge that really didn't want a job or even want to work for that matter but some lying recriuter dragged them out from under a bush and promised them "easy money" and a truck to live in, Only to toss them aside in a few months and trash their DAC (Which didn't exist in those days) and render them even more jaded and unemployable than before.
When we started if you wanted to do this you needed to know someone that was willing to show you the ropes.

I never saw ten trucks stop either but I can't tell you how many times I was stopped on the side of the road for some reason or another and another driver would pull over to check and see if everything was OK.
I've had guys pull over and give me a fuel filter and help me change it! I've done the same quite a few times over the years too.
What I've NEVER done is drive by some guy sitting on the side and holler on the radio..."Hey driver! You alright?" with NO INTENTION of stopping or helping in any way like these idiots do today.

That being said...Most new drivers wouldn't know a fuel filter if you hit them on the head with it anyway.

That is exactly how I started. Fresh out of the Army with a fundamental knowledge of driving a truck gained on an IHC Fleetstar.
I could change gears and back up enough to get by. I got my class 5 and passed a road test. It was srictly a team job and I learned the other stuff from the older drivers(log book, scales etc) as I went along. It was all floor loads with a lot of stops. .18 cpm split. Stop pay was 2.50 split after 5 stops. $50 unloading pay for a 40 ft. split of course and $55 for a 45ft.
I knew plenty of guys that would ride with a buddy a few months to learn and then put in an application with phony references. The company wasn't blind to this, just the way it was done.
It was rare to meet anybody that went to an actual school. I think we came out OK, but those days are long gone.
