Yep. 70 hours a week at work and zero overtime pay is earned. Not a good life really.

Some hit this question right on the head, it's not a tough job, but being going from home for weeks and even months at a time, many think their OK with it, until they are actually gone for that time frame, and realize? "This sucks", I've done it for a long time, and now at this time in my life, I dont want to be gone any more, thus the reason, I'm looking for something local, to spend time with my wife and family

I did exactly that. I was out just about all of the time and my Son was just 2 years old. I was lucky and knew someone that could help me get into tankers and once I was there I realized this was my ticket. I knew then I'd never go back to percentage pay or cents per mile. I got paid when I went through the gate and then it stopped when I went home. If I worked over 10 hours in a day my pay went to time and a half or if I went over 40 hours in a week. I was home every night and only worked 4 days a week or 5 days a week if you wanted ot. It meant the world to me to be there for my Son and Wife.

One nice thing: if you get burned out and quit, you can always come back! I have, so many times.

Not if your aim is to land a job in a company up in the top 10% percentile on the payscale. For that you want a solid work history for 1-3 years which translates to designating that amount of time to having no life whatsoever.

But sure, if you are after ANY trucking job you can come and go as you please.... Who the #### wants that?

Who wants that? Someone who is single, who doesn't need the $ so badly for 365 days per year, who doesn't want to get fat and soft, sick, lonely, and totally burnt out, cut off from nature and friends and family. Someone who doesn't need constant noise, stress, breathing fumes and dust (COPD, anyone?), long hours, weeks away from home, living in a vibrating piece of machinery 24/7. I appreciate having a job in trucking, but I also appreciate being able to leave for awhile. Thank goodness there is a demand for drivers. Sheesh, I wonder why.
