I remember my first car was a stick. Then I got an automatic. I hated it. I'm assuming this sensation could translate over to tractor trailers.

Yes, replying to my own quote! I forgot to mention this. To me, there's a huge difference in feel going from a manual transmission (4 wheeler) to an automatic. I was quite used to manuals, I had never driven an automatic until I was 18, so it felt weird to spend my first couple of years on the road in a stick then switching when I got another car.

I can understand why some folks are against automatics. Some of us just don't like change.

I bet if 18 wheelers were automatics from the beginning and now they wanted to make them manual, we'd all be poo-pooing the manual trucks, too.

And again.. these aren't the fluid drive allisons.. these are a standard transmission with a brain and an X-Y shift head.. Reverse in this transmission is the same as the reverse in any other truck with a standard transmission. Half the problem with discussions on automatics is dispelling the myths from people who are experts on the auto's that have never driven one.

Yet they seem to love the electronic engines, air ride, A/C power steering, satellite communication, radial tires, non cab over, non coffin sleeper etc etc etc..

Why not automatic you ask because most companies have manual transmission and one day automatics in trks will become obselete then what will you do if you find a company that only has the standard 10speed?I'll tell you what will happen, you'll have to go thru training all over again.Upshifting and downshifting is easy once you get exp.It becomes second nature. Also shifting a semi is alot different then your own personal vehicle. When your at school learning the trk leave the way you drive your car at home and listen to your instructor.

That kind of attitude as a student should tell you that you've made a bad career choice.....If you can't learn the profession don't criticize those that have!

Not sue if you ate implying I am spreading a myth... but unless you were in the truck with me all those many years ago, I stand by what I said.

When that transmission, and for that matter the Cat auto did the same thing, the clutch engaged and it went right to speed which was 3 mph or so. You had to use the break to control the speed. As I stated this was 28 years ago, the truck with.the Cat I drove from 80-84 and the one with the Allison was from 84-85...

You may be right on the functionality of it, but I can assure you I am corect on the actual use of it.
