I am a leased on. I haul for customers that a one truck operation could never even contact. Lockheed Martin, GE, Boeing, Pratt Whitney, FAA and many more, But once again I don’t know what I am missing, may have to get my own number so I can make the big buck hauling off load boards.
Just depends how much freedom you want and how much bs your willing to deal with. I’d run independent no matter what, but I have built a fleet as well. I’d run full outlaw if it was the 70’s again. However, those times are gone and it’s about strictly business and efficiency.
From what I'm seeing in my neighborhood. So far. The only opportunity to run your own show. Is otr. I know nucor wants at least 2 trucks. I'm still researching. One of the above posts pretty much puts a nail in it. When your truck is broke down. So is your company. And your driver. YOU. Your whole operation is down. As for what companies I'm finding so far. Truck must be 2012 or newer.
My great uncle Bob was an "outlaw" trucker. Overweight sometimes but mainly I heard he'd go many many miles without sleeping, not smart...but he said he just never felt too tired. I swear he said 40 hours straight one time. WW2 Vet. Flew 49 bomber missions. Killed in his 90's in a VA hospital by another Veteran. Very interesting man to talk to.
Maybe but not impossible. Trust me I was able to get to GE back In The day when I ran a pickup truck, Boeing as well. It depends on how hungry you are.
Your own authority is what you will need then, but that freedom will be paid with headaches and paperwork.
