If pulling one doesn't pay enough, what makes you think pulling two does?
-
I pull 2 24's with a long drawbar. For powder its easier to load to max legal without going over axle. and alsomost cement batch plants are tightso its just easier than the semi.
-
I like those long drawbars. If you get out of CA look at the gasoline trucks. They are truck and trailers (not doubles) just like CA but the drawbars are 20' and the trailers are 4 axles. CA trucks hold around 8900 gallons and we hauled 12,450 gallons. I could take that very long truck and go more places than a semi ever thought about going. Plus with a truck and trailer you can do an old trick and hop the trailer over if you need to get through a tight spot.
It stands to reason that the companies needed the best maneuvering truck to get into and out of the old gas stations that have very little room. The stations are small but the volume is huge so the bigger the truck the better. We had some stations that took 2 loads a day! -
Agent86,
Just love seeing those pictures of the trains you guys pull.

its not just because 1 trailer is going to a certain location and the other trailer is going somewhere else
here at UPS Freight, all of our road drivers pull doubles, and they are all dedicated runs, and both pups go to the same terminal
u only get 3 feet more trailer space, but they say the main reason to use double is something to do with the bridge law -
I think he was saying that pulling a single load at a time didn't pay the company enough...as opposed to the driver.

Bottom picture...YOU GUYS ARE STONE COLD NUTS! Would be intrigueing though..how heavy on the bottom shot...gross that is?Baack Thanks this.
-
110-120 tonnes IIRC, which would be 242K lbs - 264K lbs Gross..
There are some 4 trailer setups that run heavier..
I was going to go give them a shot, but the money just isnt there.. -
That is the primary reason, but something else is getting overlooked here.
Some of the guys in this discussion may mot realize this is LTL freight, not two separate truckloads.
If you had a truck leaving DallasTX with Birmingham AL freight and Atlanta GA freight, he would naturally stop in Birmingham first.
If he is pulling a single trailer, the Atlanta freight would be unloaded at the Birmingham terminal and reloaded on another trailer. Sometimes a few pieces get overlooked and left behind. Sometimes damages occur handling the product multiple times. Either situation can cost you a customer.
As a rule, the fewer times you handle the freight, the less shortages and damages will occur.
Along with cost and on time delivery, these are two of the most important factors in customer retention.
