Actually, no I am not looking for for more carriers. My cut off point is 7 trucks so I do not spread myself too thin, and that is where I am. I neither advertise nor solicit. When a slot opens, it's my carriers who close the gap for me - they refer me. And I do agree that a driver can self dispatch. But it is about working smart, saving time, delegating - those are some of the basic elements of a business plan. And above all, my fees are tax deductible. If a driver has time to self dispatch, great (than again, may be not so great). But it strikes me that it is more "No way" regarding a dispatch service on the basis of "Just because" than anything else....If I could hire someone to shovel the snow from my yard, then write off their fees on my taxes - Why would I not do so and use that time to accomplish some of task?

Im not so sure if a driver should self dispatch.
Weeks ago I posted that some new drivers in the industry behave as if freedom in it's totality to run as they should run to be anywhere in the USA on time to the hour dot. They freeze up and ask for someone to hold their hand across the USA.
I can probably self dispatch, but that's too close to needing my own authority and all the things that go with that. if Im gonna self dispatch then let's get the authority and get it started. What I do good with is choosing a good option should I be presented with several possible trips (*Loads) after getting empty. I would choose one that I know will be the least difficult of all the options and maybe have to turn down a more difficult load or one that does not pay enough miles for the time invested such as a multidrop that lasts 5 days in the NE for a few hundred miles. If you are on percentage then you will be ok, but if you were paid mileage drifting around the NE for 5 days on 400 pay miles or so is not adequate. Not that.
And people wonder why I say trucking is feast and famine... I rather have a 2500 mile run to Phoenix knowing I will be sent to Nogales or perhaps West Phoenix for Cantelope or something (I forget the exact name of this town, it's literally 40 miles west and north of Phoenix, a short run on I think 10 west until 20 miles then a US highway the last 20 or 30. I remember that one because of the nature of that US Highway being curvy and hilly demanding a higher level of attention to the truck and terrain.MHC Thanks this. -
The tax deductible argument is BS. So I would send you $50 just so that I don't have to send the government $15. Yeah that is a smart plan.

What point? Negotiating rates and booking loads is the most important thing a truck owner can do. Nothing else is a bigger factor in if the truck owner succeeds and makes money, or fails and goes broke. Your metaphor about the snow shoveling is wrong. A comparison that is much more accurate is why should i love my wife and kids when i can pay another man to love her and raise them.Last edited: Mar 20, 2017
