To all who is currently in the trucking industry, retired, or entering the industry why you picked truck driving? I'm sure there are plenty topics out there like this but I'm having trouble locating them, it won't hurt to post again. I'm curious!

I'm going to start driving in December after I get a bachelors degree in criminology. Was planning on being a cop but these last few years I've been really thinking about different career options and trucking is something i think I would like. A lot of family member have driven trucks but I'm not really sure what about it makes me want to drive, I just do.

all i can say is this...when i was working as a mechanic i was getting disgusted with the tools i was buying on a regular basis, i was getting tired of all the things i had to go to seminars to be kept up to date for, i was getting tired of all the customers demands that they wait for their car's engine to be over hauled while they waited and wanted it done in an hour or less.

i had a co-worker, a "medically retired" truck driver that encouraged me to get into trucking to get away from all the BS in the repair trade..

i wish i could find him now, as i'd strangle him.......

trucking IS NOT and NEVER WILL BE like it was years ago. there will be EVEN MORE, rules, regulations, restrictions on truck drivers in the up coming years, and frankly, i am so happy that i am close to retirement myself.

others here will boast how good to great the industry is, others will have just as much bad to say as i do. take your pick, as we are each right in our opinions and thoughts about the industry.

trucking will never, ever "die out", as there WILL ALWAYS BE a plethora of wannabe's, newbies coming into the business on a DAILY BASIS mind you, and those people have already been discovering that trucking is a BS industry and some have left. so there will always be a "rotation" of that revolving door that leads into and OUT of trucking.....

do i recommend that someone get into trucking...??? HHMMmmm...not really, but would i encourage someone from entering..??? HHMMMmmm...yes, but with reservations.....

one NEEDS to realize that trucking can be a lifestyle that no one can ever be fully prepared for, and for someone to wannabe a trucker because, "they like driving", or "always wanted to be a driver", or "like being away from home"..or.. "i lost my job and i finally decided to be a truck driver"...???

those ARE NOT the right reasons to become a truck driver.

how quickly life BIOTCH SLAPS THEM when they find out how trucking REALLY IS....

if you love what you do--its not a job
life is way to short to be doing something that you dont like
for me-the main thing is a good company--pay is second
why work at someplace you hate just for a bit of extra money?
