The guidelines are just that guidelines. We need more education on what is really in the food we eat. Most people have no idea how to read a food label or to figure out what a serving size consists of. An average person eats for example, a can of condensed chicken noodle soup (add water) for most adults we can eat this no problem. Per the label: it's 2.5 servings and the sodium content: 2250mg sodium-> the new recommnedation for sodium is 1500-1800mg day. You think just because you buy a can or box of something that ''says'' it's healthy does not mean so. Many low fat foods have a high sugar content to adjust for loss of fat and visa versa for low sugar. People need to start to read what is in their food-go back to fresh or frozen (veggies) stop buying prepared foods (yes - I realize this is tough for drivers-as that is pretty much all hubby can eat on the truck -esp w/fridge out!) or at least look for low fat/sodium/cholesterol. I think alot of people at some point have a wake up call or the 'light goes on' and the change can be made.
Our food is killing us......
