Please tell me where in this country $10 per hour is good money. I'd bet that a pretty large portion of people in the United States make at least $20 per hour, that is $42,000 a year. The median income for a male 25 or over is $43,000 per year.
HAHAHAHAHAHA Where do you get your info? You have to be joking. That's why so many college kids are moving back home because they cant find jobs to just pay their loans.
Why, Why, Why?

It's because of the state unemployment is saying truck driving jobs are in demand when they are not. So the state pays for schooling .

Median income doesn't mean much. I have heard of many people who have drown in water with an median depth of 6 inches.
Many, many jobs in Iowa are only paying $10 an hour. Quite a few even less. Sure there are jobs paying more, but the median income in Iowa is no where near as good as the $43,000 you mention. A job in Iowa paying $20 an hour is darn hard to find. There are a few of them, but not that many. I haven't seen an average job in my area paying $20 an hour for quite a while. Many local trucking jobs barely reach the $15 an hour category. My net last year in trucking was over $60,000. There are a lot of people in my area that think we are living pretty large.
I live amoung these people in Iowa and I am a lot better off than most of the people around here. Many of them have both spouses working and are not as well off as I am. Many of the college kids you mentioned do not hang around here because of the lower entry level salaries. The only people with salaries near what you proclaim are government workers. But then, the average salary of a government worker in Iowa is almost 50% higher than the average private sector salary for the same type of job. Not my speculation, fact per the Dept of Labor. -
You're right Cowpie1, I live in DesMoines and finding that $10/hr job might not even be easy. Way to many people for the jobs, so the employers have the advantage. I know in retail, you probably won't make over $9/hr., really sad but true. I was managing a national chain type retail store and was only paid around $30000 in 2007. I made close to $54000 as a company driver last year. Not a perfect world, but better than other options for me.

I just started doing this and so far I feel like I'm getting a fair wage for the type of work I do. Grossing $800 a week isn't that bad. It is a stressful job with little time home but its not exactly physically demanding although the stresses can wear you out. I was never home when I worked pipeline either but I came "home" sore, tired, and hungry (famished really) 6 days a week and I was paid accordingly for the type of work. It is good money if you spend it right. I know its different for married people with families but for me I take my home with me everywhere rent free. I also avoid truck stop food as it can get expensive really fast. I dunno, I know everyones situation is different but $800/wk beats the hell out of the $245/wk unemployment check, for me at least. I would like to see truckers organize and fight for a better wage, especially those who have been in the industry for years.
