i am lucky enough to live in the chicago area and get a good driving job. in my 10 years of driving 95% of my time driving has been in a cement mixer and the other 5% hauling sound equipment for the entertainment industry, very little otr, mostly local work
this past spring i got the oportunity to get my class a with the wia program and i jumped on it, it got me more work in hauling sound equipment since the construction has slowed down
i got a grant from the goverment to make me more marketable in the work force, and your upset because of it. im so sorry it bothers you.
as far as being a driver or a dock worker, if your doing both then your taking money out of someone elses pocket, around here you would be called a scab
WIA - a way to pay for your way!

Ooooh.. Be careful with that term man.. It really refers to someone that crosses a picket line which I've never done and wouldn't do in 80% of cases. That term is used by union workers when describing replacement workers that work while they're on strike working for less - kinda like new drivers do daily right..
Since you're from the Chi I'm a little surprised you don't know what the term really means or stands for. Even though the LTL company I work for is vocally non-union, I cannot be called that term by union drivers since I don't cross lines and I make substantially more than any union driver operating under the NMFA.
Be very very careful when using that term - better know exactly what it means which clearly you don't. UPS Freight drivers who are union, generally work the dock just like I do.
I'm waiting for your response here.. I have really thick skin but that term is way out of bounds unless I'm somehow violating something in a contract which I'm clearly not. Be real careful when tossing that around new guy alright........ -
I was denied for WIA due to earning too much, yet was told if I was receiving stamps I wouldve gotten the assistance. Aint that a PITA

i said around here you would be called a scab. i never called you a scab personally
im sorry if i offended you, maybe around here you would called a rat instead
as far as qualifying for WIA, last year i only worked 10 days so i qualified as a displaced worker -
What do I say when call/email these people? I feel awkward just saying "Hey, I need some money!"
-
You go to your local unemployment office and ask to speak to the WIA person. Then you tell them what you need. "Help paying for school"
-
And pray they have any money left in the program. I am on a waiting list but doubt there will be any end of the year crumbs to pay for the school I want to attend.
