Agreed! I have been working since I was 15 and I am now almost 31 and NEVER till April 2010 have I filed unemployment or used government aid. The stereotype of someone getting assistance from the government does not always match up. Just saying!

I'm a displaced worker also and I jumped through the whole FASFA hoops, got approved for the maximum amount only to be told by the colleges around here that you can't use Pell grants or ANY federal aid for truck driving school because it is too short of a course! I talked to Iowa Workforce Development and they confirmed it. So what gives that others claim they are able to? Seems to me that if a course is through an accredited college what difference does it make how long the course is??? They are sure charging the same as a full course!

I am going threw the state to get schooling to get my refresher course in truck driving. I took my drug test yesterday. I call the unemployment worker to see if I can start school on 6/6 and start with Schneider on 7/10. Well they just told me they dont have any money to put me in school. So now I cant get a job because the government that I pay taxes to cant pay for it. Maybe I should write Obama?
flguy Thanks this. -

I heard a instructor at a WIA administration facility here mention to another instructor while waiting for the orientation class to start that she went to a meeting and "they are unsure about funding but tentatively they are scheduling everything as normal in the future". This was all off the record. They never said anything to any of us there for scholarships that there was a possibility of funding not being there. I'm on the fence about whether to go through all the bureaucracy required (and no possibility of getting to the school before August) or not already. I'm doubting it all the more if the funding is questionable.
But please don't let me dissuade anyone. Your area might be different and there could actually be funding after all? -
On a related note, WIA funds in Connecticut have dried up as well. I went through a 3 month process only to be told that there were no funds "indefinitely". Total downer.
And dude above me has it correct - the neocons who stand up for the good ol' fashioned 'mericans are the ones who are slashing the life out of programs such as this. Though I must say it is sort of gratifying to see the the fools who think Obama is a "socialist devil" being betrayed by their almighty Repub.
"Conservatives" are all for cutting programs until they personally might need one. -
I could not get any WIA funding, either.

I'm just starting the WIA process. It's my understanding (from a One Stop Counselor) that they sometimes run out of funds prior to the fiscal year end which I believe she told me was July.
Hopefully all this debt ceiling crap and congress wont screw the pooch because I'm slam out of cash and up to my arse in alligators trying to stay afloat. I took a 50K a year pay cut when construction crashed with the economy a couple of years ago and my B CDL is only worth about 12 or 14 bucks an hour IF you can find a job driving a garbage truck or some such BS.
For now I'm going to continue hoop jumpin' with WIA because coming up with 5 grand for school is out of the question and I really don't want to be beholding to some slave carrier to get my tuition payed back. I hope all this works out..... I'm 54 and have only collected unemployment for 6 weeks my entire working life. It's about time to get a little back.
Thanks for listening and stay safe.
