The Workforce Incentive Act as we know it now was created by Clintion. Carter had tried to impliment his own version and Reagan had a Dislocated worker program which I thought was rolled up into WIA. It is the Dislocated Worker part of the Act that pays for re-training. However, our current congress wants to eliminate all of it. Part of WIA pays businesses to create jobs and gives states money to give tax breaks to SMALL companies that do.. SMALL does not include the mega-carriers.. training companies like England, Werner, Swift, CRST and even Central do not receive WIA money. Small trucking schools and community colleges do.
I know people like to believe trucking companies get federal assistance, but they don't you have to be a car company or bank for that.![]()
WIA program might come to an end

I'll try to be nice here,
First I understant this will hurt driving schools...sry
BUT How many people that get WIA funding for truck driving actully stick with it? How many DONT have a bad driving record or criminal record?
Now I didnt use WIA funding, I paid cash BOTH times, BUT both times i was in school I was the ONLY person who paid for it myself......
I was also the ONLY person there without a criminal record, and a list of tickets. I was also the ONLY one there who knew ANYTHING about trucking! BOTH times while the instructor was helping someone everyone else would be asking me questions and when I gave the the answer I got....WHAT! I'm going to have to do WHAT! F that and whatever else....
The trucking industry will do nothing but BENEFIT from takeing away WIA funding. It will require people to actully WANT and WORK to become a truck driver not just say F it I'll try it since its FREE!
And to those of you who really need it and used to to get a job so you can support your family....sry To many people have taken advantage of it and abused it, like everything else...

In my county, WIA only covered $1500 of an $8000 tuition. I am still on the hook for $6500@18% and don't have a truck driving job yet. And yes, I signed up to provide for my family. I guess I should have read this forum more before signing on the dotted line...

ya I saw that, just agreeing with you

I wish I had found this forum before I shelled out the cost of CDL school.
I paid for the whole ball of wax outta my own pocket, not realizing how much the industry had changed in the 27 years since I last drove OTR. -
Did you leave trucking again after getting back into it? Just Curious...

Fortunately for me, I had the cash reserves to hold out a while longer and landed a new job in my primary career field.American-Trucker and AfterShock Thank this. -
I'm glad WIA was there the first time in my life I needed a financial lifeline...I think making it contingent upon a year of service in the industry they train you for or you owe it would be fair...I would have signed for that, heck I would have signed for repaying it once I got the job...I also agree with AT, people will stick to something they invest in which is one of the reasons we have so many people walking away from the homes they got with no money down...Nothing invested, nothing to lose...
AfterShock Thanks this.
