Hello all,
Since ill be making a cross country trip soon, and have always wanted to get into cb, i figured it would be no better time than now. Anyways i drive a Hummer H2 and went out and purchased a uniden bearcat 880 radio and a wilson 5000 magnet mount antenna.
Got it all hooked up, calibrated the radio on channel 20, checked the swr, per the on board swr meter on the radio and im getting 6.5 on channel 40, 8.5 on channel 19 and 12.5 on channel 1........
The antenna is located in the center of the roof and slightly forward towards the front of the truck. The coax is routed along the roof rack crossbars, along the driver roof rail, down into the front drivers door jam, into the fender and then into the engine compartment and then through the firewall into the back of the radio. I have tried to adjust the height of the antenna but that doesnt affect the swr at all. I am however able to pick up channel 7 wx.
What can i possibly do to lower these numbers?
Im very very green with cbs.
Thank you all in advance.
Wicked high swr?

My first guess is your probably reading the meter wrong...Second would be to either find a local cb shop where you could get them to check it, or buy a in-line SWR Meter to check and set the antenna.
Could also have a short somewhere in the coax cable, my guess would be one of the connectors.
But really think your reading the meter wrong mainly because I have never seen a SWR reading over 6...(over 4 for as that go's) -
I agree, at the very least buy a cheap inline swr meter and plug in line to check and calibrate. When you are done, disconnect it

Check grounds. If it's anything like my Tahoe, the roof and cab are electrically isolated from the front clip. Bonding was critical in my case.
Slowmover1 and Cam Roberts Thank this. -
How were you able to get a good ground with your antenna. Because i just checked my roof using my powerprobe and its not giving me a ground light
