no its not I just thanked you.....lmao.....

I think you all do a great job, sometimes some of you go a little overboard at times, and maybe jump to a conclusion. Then again you may close a thread maybe a little early especially when after driving all day come up with something really good to post only to find it closed....

but if you mods could show us or tell us how to use the forum white out on here it would be a great help....(you know kinda like the white out one uses to correct mistakes on paper).....

BTW this is not hazing or harassment, it is only an opinion!

We used to send the new guys for a tube of dial tone lube.

Or a bucket of overflow tone.

Sometimes we sent them for real things with different names.
    Copper connecting hose (phone cable)
    Cable length adjuster (wire cutters)

The funniest thing was seeing them get their first jolt of analog ring voltage. (Especially if you are the one dialing the number) You can tell them all you want that it will scare them but not hurt them and it never fails to make them jump about 3 feet back from the cable.... LOL

To get the new guy out of the way when the system was down we would send them to look in the van for jumper cables.(there was never any in there) Most of the systems were DC with a battery rack. Sometimes you just needed them gone.

I had a boss one time bragging how he had the phone system on the 23rd floor and had phones working in the basement. I said "Yeah but you had gravity to pull that dial tone down the cable!" Man did I get the strangest look for that one.... Took him a minute to figure it out.

Frankly, this thread really grinds my gears, and if it were only my call to make it would have been nuked a long time ago.

Fortunately for those among us who like to haze people, it's not.

There is a difference between hazing and harassment, but when I looked up the definition of both, there can be "some similarities" between the 2.

Now we have all heard of harassment, of all kinds. We have all heard of hazing, of all kinds, but sadly, when hazing is done at some colleges, some one can actually die.

In this industry, and maybe the military, and other skilled trades, to tell someone to look for (say)100 mph duct tape, will NOT get them killed.

When someone is told to look for a left handed hammer, again no one is killed, or even injured.

Whether it be male or female, some type of hazing takes place in the work place, most is for fun, and the appointed seeker eventually get's the idea, he/she was "had", and everyone moves on.

It is the rare occasion that a co-worker continues the hazing to what seems no end. At that particular time, and in the eye of the recipient, this can indeed be construed as a form of harassment, which then someone needs to be reported.

But for the (what I deem) simple "let's break-in the newbie today", it is all intended as fun, then dropped.

sadly, i think this is the future of our industry

isnt it this "sky is falling" why everyone wants to drive 100% legal, even if it drives them into the poor house? wyld may sound outside of the realm on this thread, but he seems to fit right in with the rest of our subjects here

its always "a lawyer can find this" or "an insurance company wont cover that"

he said the right words, just wrong post

    for now

Oh dear. Lists made by people in power are never good... Just look at all the movies! :biggrin_2552:

I agree with this. Good old fashioned fun like this does two things:

1). The newbie is already tense. Having a little fun with him and getting them to laugh loosens them up. When you're uptight and worried you don't learn as well.
2). It's somewhat of an educational moment. Doing stuff like this teaches both the instructor and student. Ever had a student who didn't fall for it? You probably felt he was a quick learner right? And when the student learns it's okay to have a little fun, see the first thing.

Its when it repeatedly happens and doesn't stop is when it becomes harassment. Hazing is really only defined by the book as an initiation ritual. ...as Anthony said though it can easily be taken too far.

Stuff like this actually does have a point. We don't think of it that way often times, but it does.

I am curious, Mack, why it is you feel that way.

Hi Mack hope you're having a good day. With respect may I ask where the hazing is?When it comes to having alittle fun with the newbies and as long there is no harm and they're down with having alittle fun I don't see anything wrong with it.Heck trainers pulled the same on me as well as a factory I worked at,I thought it was funny. If I was to send a newby on a wild goose chase I would make sure he or she has a sense of humor

    Vilhiem Thanks this.
