No cdl needed to operate a switcher, but that doesn't mean you can slack off on getting that cdl ! A switcher position would give you plenty of backing practice I garuantee that What are you waiting for?
Just to be clear, I'm still in school. This school doesn't charge extra for being there longer, or so they've been saying for months. Hopefully they won't change their business plan soon. What could I have been doing for this long? Waiting for a turn! All this school cares about is the money, that is it. They'll have 3 functional trucks and 40 students if they can make it happen (they did in the winter).
Getting that CDL is your #1 priority. If you've really been at that school for that long? I say ditch them and do it quickly. You've already been given the way by other posters here and as much as we all hate recommending the megas, That's your ticket right there. There are several companies that will take you and get you that CDL. Grit your teeth, put up with whatever you need to and you're on way. This was a simple Google search on "need my CDL" https://www.google.com/search?q=need+my+CDL You can do similar variations and find lots more. Find one, make arrangements and then tell that school of yours to pound salt! Best wishes and keep it SAFE! EDIT: In fact this is right here on TTR. Used your area and "I need CDL training" https://www.truckersreportjobs.com/jobs?bfo=&e=&f=&hf=&zc=Richmond,+VA&cdlXp=-500
All I can say is times a tickin'! Started in Dec and still no fruit? Permits are generally good for 6 months unless your state works differently. If there's 3 trucks for 40 people I would have dine and dashed that place so fast. Definitely would have kept my money on the way out and no tip! Better options out there. WIA programs (if not used already for this cash grab outfit your at) can help you with funding. Check in with your states workforce employment center. Worst case scenario you sign your life away for a year for a trucking company's school and their training program. Still better than waiting in the cold through the winter for a truck lol I fully understand the situation your in. I've been there once maybe twice myself. Times get tough but don't be afraid to ask questions or pursue different avenue's to get the goal you want to reach. I'm currently in a local community college program that's pretty good. 10 weeks. 3 weeks classroom (half days) then the other 7 weeks (8hr days) are 4 students per instructor and they have a lot of equipment. Best of luck in finding a new outfit. I'm sure plenty of people can give you advice where to go.
Wow dude. You're literally lettinglife pass you by. Tell the school what you need and want. If they can't do that, hit the door. Head to another school. You are stuck and going no where. Muster up the gumption and get what you need out of the invest you've made in time and money. Its July and and you've been at it since December.
I don't know where you live but Millis has there own schools in a half dozen cities. They put you up in a good hotel, and school is 3 weeks M--F you can practice on weekend all you want and you will pass. They will teach you. Then you go out with a trainer for you to drive not team 15000 miles then you test out and your on your way. Fleet of New T680 loaded inverter, refrigerator, directv etc. Get out of that school there just waiting for the day you don't come back. PS I wrote a day by day log on here so you know what you will be doing every day. Be Safe Out There Captain Dave
