As they say in this business, it is what you make of it. Personally, I enjoy F/B, I have from the start. There are a lot of differences between F/B and van, as all the others have pointed out, and there are also a lot of the same things. You're still at shipper's a long time, the difference is most of the time you're working so it does go by faster. For me tarping is the downside. In the summer, you're sweating to death and the winter you're sweating to death, except with cold wet hands. For me, it is the way to go. You are going to work and earn what they give you, but so far in the 5 years I've been doing it, I wouldn't change.
Will I like Flatbed?

I'm not fat or lazy and I hated flatbed. I was always running past my 11 because I had to screw around with tarps and securment. I was working 80 hours in five days just to net $800 a week. I was paid percentage of the gross so I never knew how much money I was making.
I was always worried about my load shifting and going across a scale was always a concern, especially in Oregon. I never liked being on top of a 15ft high lumber load rolling out tarps, just one slip and you can fall and brake your neck.
I'm very happy now pulling a hopper. So glad I got out of it.
Everyone is diffrent and you should try every thing just to see if it's something you like. For me money has to be good or anything is going to suck. -
A 15' high lumber load?
GarretMc23, BigCam9670, peterbilt_2005 and 4 others Thank this. -
What's understood need not be explained!
skellr Thanks this. -
Ok maybe it was 14ft, what's the difference. That's pyramid, even the 11ft loads felt like 15ft.

What was really scary was after you roll out the tarp you can't see what your stepping on.whoopNride Thanks this.

You can't feel your feet? Route planning also helps. Look at the route before you roll it out. sounds like you just didn't like the heights.
Hurst Thanks this. -
No problem with the height, just the fall. I'm no wussy, I used to frame houses. I just don't like walking on tarps that may or maynot be on top of a lumber bundle.

A legal height load vs a illegal height load. Or maybe a true story vs a BS one.GarretMc23, peterbilt_2005, TripleSix and 1 other person Thank this.
