Ok guys I know most truckers don't trust young guns getting into the industry, but I am 20 going on 21 with an adequate work history and I'm dying to get my foot in the door asap, will they even consider hiring a 21 year old? Or will they turn me down, I would really appreciate any and all info, I'm a #### hard worker and just want a place to kick start my career in this industry, thank you!

We are not against young guns breaking in. We are against inexperience of any age that doesn't respect the trade or themselves. Just here for a pay check till something better comes along. We need some fresh blood in the industry, as it is changing maybe they could help us change with it. We need the kind of people that take pride in a job well done and willing to learn also liking what you are doing helps. My son got his license at 18 but can't leave the state. Hauls grain, was part timing for a semi retired O/O while in college. At the end of summer break after running all year he asked me to help him get a truck, he tried ut needed more credit history. Wasn't crazy about it but I did, I couldn't be more proud of him now. He has made a darn good hand, so they say I have only got to run with him a few times. It helps that he grew up watching me but the biggest key is loves what he does. If its what you want to do and really like it after a while then no doubt you will be successful at it. Have confidence but don't be overconfident. If you love what you do you'll never work a day in your life. But now keep in mind pay is low to start but gets better, and keep the they dont pay us for all our hours guys out of your ear. Its a millage paying gig usually and lots of extras are expected of the driver like waiting to load and un load for no pay.

Wow, your son sounds like a great man and a hard worker, I really appreciate everything, just this little bit boosted my confidence through the roof, I will never give up and keep trying. My father drove otr for about 20 years and I would love going with him, ever since then I've been hooked, I take pride in everything I do an I will definitely take pride in my driving, millis transfer looks promising and could be a good start for me, thank you very much, wore out

Also, how did he start hauling grain and was it a mom an pop company? I wouldn't mind starting out that way at all.

    What he said ^^^^^^^
Two of my three sons are truck drivers. My oldest son has about 10 years, accident free. My youngest son is 26, and he has almost 5 years accident free. This industry can always use good, new professional drivers. A lot of us are getting towards the end of our careers, and it's nice to see a good, new driver take up the profession. If that's you, then welcome. I hope you have a great career.

When he graduated I wanted him to go to college so he promised a year and go from there. He had all his classes on tueday and thursday. An acquaintance of ours was wanting to slow down an enjoy life so Shag got the written part and they agreed to ride togather on days he wasn't in school. After 2 days together Terry took him to the CDL testing center and had him do the driving. I found out a week later lol. I asked my son how it was going he said alright I guess hadn't talked to Toes in days. Before I could ask he said took the driving part and past. Any way Toes was tired of honey do jobs and the broker was pleased with my son and they all pushed him to go back to school but his mind was made up. What I wasn't prepared for is I have drove a red and black 359 Pete off and on since he was small. Finally bought it. He was set on a red and black 379 how could I say no? Check out post #711 in truck pix post yours.

Just bum any driver you know, when he would go with me I always let him drive a little. Thought his shifting sucked, Toes said he done great right off. Just needed dad out of the truck. I still make him nervous just a thing. If the company you start out with is bad don't let them beat you down there are good ones. I been at it almost 19yrs off and on. I work on heavy equip really but always wanted to truck. Drove my truck for previous owner any time I could finally bought it. Used it as I got it back into shape. Its less money but I'm happy what else matters. Running my Pete across texas at night with that Merrit cattle drive behind it is like sex with a pornstar no better feeling
