About the bullet thing, you can even put a cigarette out in diesel. I think it was "How It's Made" or one of them shows that showed a problem in Iraq where they would shoot our gas tankers and after the fuel would leak on the ground, they could shoot again and get the fumes to explode.
With that in mind, some company produced this special rubber compound that seals itself. They painted the inside and outside of the tankers with it. Now you can shoot the tankers all day long and can't get them to explode with bullets. It was pretty neat as they showed demonstrations. Even a camera shot inside the tanker which was cool. The bullets would penetrate and fall to the bottom and the holes would close up instantaneously. -
The fuel the military uses isn't #2 diesel - it's JP8, which is a heavily refined form of kerosene.

The properties of fuel are all diffeent and if you come in contact with any of them I suggest you get up to speed so you're not the idiot on the scene the is compleltly stupid. Diesel fuel needs to be heated before it will burn. There's others problems with diesel that are worse than fire. You don't want the fuel runing down into a water system. So you should plug the hole. If someone shots at a gasoline tank then there's a little more worry. I doubt the tank would catch fire because there' no air in the tank even if it's empty. But you don't want to let any get it. What we would do once it's safe to go out is find a small wooden stick and plug the hole. Use your hoses or anything you have to stop the product from running off property. The whole point here is to know your truck and know a little about the propduct. I'm sorry but if you're worried about exploding fuel tanks at truck stops you need to go to Hollywood where that stuff happens and let the professionals do their job. BTW don't use that stupid show the myth busters for any technical information.

So, if I'm at a truckstop, and some guy shoots my tank with a gun...I can plug it with a wooden stick and it'll be ok?
Just checking, because it COULD happen... -
I keep extra wooden sticks on hand at all times because of the danger from vampires.........
U4EA Thanks this. -
Good point - the chance of getting your gas tank shot at is probably zero, but vampires are a much greater concern. The move Twilight (based on actual events) can teach you how to handle vampires while on the road.
