How much time do you have?

Remember the air traffic controllers' strike due to terrible working conditions, endangering the public, and President Reagan terminated them all because they had a no-strike promise?

Exactly what business taxes are you talking about/trying to measure? CA Does not have the highest corporate tax rate at a flat 8.8% (IIRC). As a leased O/O, LLC with sole proprietor tax status, and with my truck base plated in Oregon I don't find the tax rates in CA excessive at all. Thanks to Proposition 13 & a rising real estate market, my property taxes are quite reasonable. I would gladly pay more to get the lifestyle.

Victor- Here are a couple of books for you to read. I don't remember the authors, but you should be able to find them via Amazon or Powell's.

    1. Sweatshops on Wheels. I think this is some guys doctoral thesis, published as a book. It is thick reading, but has a lot of interesting history and research in it. The relationship between wages and the degree of union representation in the trucking industry, for example.

    2. Trucking Country. An easier to read overview of the history of our industry.

Going back to my first semester in Community College as a Business/Econ major I will never forget the professor explaining that our entire modern economy was designed on the twin pillars of cheap food and cheap transportation. I realized right then that my lifelong dreams of a nice little ranch with a chromed out Peterbilt parked in the front yard were going to consign me to an impoverished existence.

The Bee Ess meter just sounded!
I hope you don't mind Vic; sorry that your thread seems to be going a different route but I can't let this one go.
Ridgeline, all that decrepit old rhetoric has gone to bed along with all the other trick or treaters.
First off, the air traffic controllers were mainly concerned with safety issues: pay and conditions, while important, were secondary. Unless these issues were addressed, a strike was deemed possible. Reagan absolutely refused to address any safety issues, let alone wage increases and he refused to negotiate at all. Period. A strike then ensued. Reagan immediately gave them a direct order to get back to work in 48 hours or else. They were fired just 48 hours after the strike began.
Never, did the air traffic controllers agree to never strike; they did agree, however, to "never condone an illegal" strike. The important safety issues are what brought the strike into legal status.
Of course, should the air traffic controllers get what they asked, then heck, what about all the other employees, both public and private? Would they start striking too? Can't have that now, can we? That would mean less money for the guys at the top, Reagan included. So he fired em'.
Incidentally, the fallout from that debacle still haunts us to this day in the form of outdated and antiquated equipment in all the modern control towers; the mindset is don't fix anything till it's broke. Or until you crash.
And the unions did not "screw themselves" in the sixties. The middle class was booming, mainly as a direct result of the union influence in the labor market. What "screwed them" were all the extensive deregulations, along with the abolition of most of the anti trust acts brought on by the fellows in government (on that old corporate dime); Gotta get that labor cheaper, Mr. Pres.! Here's a few more bucks for you and the wife....
And your comment that nobody cares about unions these days is pure excrement. I can assure you that they do. However, people have grown ignorant and misinformed in regards to collective bargaining, due mainly to all the corporate owned media baloney that has been pumped into listeners' minds for the past 35 years or so. Can't have any critical thinkers out there now.. They might become a threat!
And that's a great analogy that the labor class has been "elevated" to the middle class. Problem is, the middle class is now the same as the "lower" class, which coincidentally correlates with the unions' demise. Not much improvement there. And education vs. labor (as in your analogy) doesn't hold much water these days either. Probably the best line anybody with a college degree these days could learn is, "Do you want fries with that"?
And public servants should never be allowed to unionize? Says who? Of course they should, if they get a majority vote to do so. That's democracy at work, baby, and that's how it rolls. Thank those lucky stars. And stripes.
P.S. Do you think any of the above might have anything to do with the fact that just 5% of Americans control nearly 90% of Americas' wealth?

I don't know, you posted links to personal property tax and personal income tax which has little to do with how businesses look at California. Corporate tax rate is just one of many, so ...

    EXAMPLE!
UPS hauls a load of packages from Harrisburg to LA and it's 2600 miles. Each package costs around $5.00 to ship and the truck will hold 4000 packages. Isn't that $20,000.00/load? What happens to the other $8000.00 after expenses? Why can't they pay more?
