Going to a single antenna setup and have been considering the Wilson 2K. But recently have heard people talking about the 5K.
Is the 5K worth the extra money over the 2K on a stock radio with no amps, etc?
Wilson 5K or 2K?

You can run more power thru it, but it won't get out any better. The length of a CB antenna is what makes the difference for the most part and those antennas are the same except for their power rating.

2k is just fine

Great! Thanks! Wilson 2K it is!!
One other question. I think I know the answer to this, but I'm going to ask anyway just to be sure.
Rather than running new Mini-8 coax, should I just stick to duals and run two Wilson 2Ks? Or is a single antenna with new Mini-8 coax better? -
Most everyone will probably tell you that ONE is always better than two. There are tons of threads on the matter
The Gryphon Thanks this. -
i have the K40 trucker, the K40 trucker plus (teardrop design) and the K40 mag/trunk lip mount antenna. i cant tell a difference at all between the 3 as far as the barefoot radio goes. all 3 are great antennas. buy what you can afford, but dont buy junk. a 300 dollar radio and a 7 dollar antenna result in a 7 dollar radio setup. you would be better off spending the money on a good antenna, coax and mount and have the SWRs set with a smaller low performance radio like a cobra 25 than to get the "big radio" and skimp on the antenna with the hopes of reaching out and touching someone.
and about the cophased antenna, dont waste your money. there is not enough distance between the mount points when installing the twin antenna to make them be actually cophased. buy a spare antenna or your own SWR meter instead. -
The theoretical maximum gain for co-phased vertical antennas on the mirrors is right around 1 dB. That assumes properly installed, tuned, and matched antennas. Even then, the losses from the extra hardware (phasing harness, couplers, and connectors) could add up to nearly that much.
Of course, what are the chances of having TWO properly installed, tuned, and matched antennas on the same truck??? -
Although I run the Wilson antenna, when using them cophased I always found that I had to trim the upper whip to get them to properly tune. A bolt cutter is your friend and so it time jumping in and out of the truck. It is a pain to get them both tuned the same. So I just ran one and ended up spending a lot less time jumping in and out and cutting stingers etc and found the system actually got out far better with a single rather then a dual setup.

if you are driving in extrem cold temps you may want to spring for the 5K

Why? What's the difference?
