That reminded me of a trick sometimes used at night, Bump the mirror outwards a notch so lights from behind reflect away from your peripheral vision. All you have to do is simply move your head slightly to view whats following or passing on the left.

I have driven with my sun glasses on at night more than a few times. It helps if your used to having tinted windows in your personal vehicle:)

Those yellow glasses work but they make everything a little darker.

I'll have to give the red light a shot.

I happen to wear glasses. And much of my windows and glasses seem to get dirty almost instantaneously upon starting off my day.

I know window cleanliness definitely will help alot as well.
But I'm just curious how the red light would help?

As a former Optician my experience with the anatomy of the human eye over 7 years conducting visual test reinforces my suggestion.

Typically, drivers are sitting in a dark environment driving late at night, agreed? The pupil responds to low light and automatically opens wider so light frequencies enter through the lens. The red light is suggested to produce an ambient environment where the Red LED map light can easily reduce glare and improve visual acuity in the Cab.

Visible wavelengths pass largely unattenuated through the Earth's atmosphere via the "optical window" region of the electromagnetic spectrum. An example of this phenomenon is when clean air scatters blue light more than red light, and so the midday sky appears blue. The optical window is also referred to as the "visible window" because it overlaps the human visible response spectrum.

Now for the science behind the Red Light....

Electromagnetic waves of different frequency are called by different names since they have different sources and effects on matter. In order of increasing frequency and decreasing wavelength these are: radio waves, microwaves, infrared radiation, visible light, ultraviolet radiation, X-rays and gamma rays.

Red wavelenght 620–750 nm Frequency 400–484 THz

By increasing the intensity of the red color spectrum, a masking effect diminishes the other frequencys which cause irritation, halos and glare.

The theory of Red Light can be proved simply. 1st, turn off all lights in a room leaving only a blue or green led clock (digital clocks on microvave ovens). 2nd, Flood the room with Red Lamps and see what happens!

Natural sources produce EM radiation across the spectrum. EM radiation with a wavelength between approximately 400 nm and 700 nm is directly detected by the human eye and perceived as visible light.

Note that red light has the lowest “energy” of visible light.

Red light has been used in Submarines and Airplanes. It turns out that some submarines use red interior lights for the same reason as airport control towers (at night), planetariums, and some movie theaters. The reason is that it's easier for your eyes to adjust from red light to dark than from white light to dark.

Back to the question, how does Red Light reduce glare from headlights....in Summary, your eye can adapt easier to the changes between skattered light and the total darkness of the cab at night.
