If that was the case states would forbid it sold in stores. Tinting is the application of an exterior material as film or spray. Tinting the glass in the manufacture process is called glazing.

When tint first come out you could buy anything in my state down to 5%. Now the darkest they sell is by our state law which is 35%. I'm sure the other states are sold the same way by state law. I'm sure the manufacturer also takes into consideration the glazing of glass. So if the glass is already 75% the addition of 70% tint should be made accordingly when you add the two together. If you read the box the window film is certified to meet state laws. Some states they put a sticker in the box to put between the glass and tint showing the certification.

Here's AL, I grabbed the first one on the list.

    (d) Coloring or tinting of windshields and windows. Coloring or tinting of windshields and the windows to the immediate right and left of the driver is allowed, provided the parallel luminous transmittance through the colored or tinted glazing is not less than 70 percent of the light at normal incidence in those portions of the windshield or windows which are marked as having a parallel luminous transmittance of not less than 70 percent. The transmittance restriction does not apply to other windows on the commercial motor vehicle.

that means at least 70 % light has to go through. not max tint. 70 % max tint would only leave 30 % light transmittance.

no more then 30 % tint. and as i stated. 25% is what cars have. i'm assuming trucks would be the same. so 5% tint would be all that's allowed.

used to be a big thing in utah. you could find a tint store every mile in the city. i don't think any shops are around anymore.

70 % tint on top of the already built in 25 % would put you at 95 % leave only 5 % light transmittance.

Friend got nailed because the camera on the road caught the limo tint and when he was on the scale, he came over the speaker and said roll up the window and then to park it.

The link posted earlier is out of date and it's for four wheelers. Tint has always been illegal in Iowa on a cmv and as of last July it is illegal on four wheelers unless your were grandfathered in and have a permanent exemption card. I have the exemption card and have been stopped and checked five times since last July. It kinda bursts their bubble when they stop us but it's still a hassle.

Minnesota wrote a warning ticket for the guy with the exemption. It is not valid on a commercial vehicle.

Yeah I know that's why I said it's always been illegal in a cmv in Iowa. My exemption just works in the four wheelers. All of them are tinted. The big trucks are not. My eyes are really sensitive to light. It usually doesn't bother me in the big truck because I pretty much sit in the sleeper but I always have really good glasses with me when that doesn't cut it.

Here's an example. You'll see this with most window tints. They could not sell their products if everyone was getting busted.
