As far as I'm aware it won't be able to upgrade you'll have to do a fresh install. Windows 10 would have to have been installed with the TPM in place and secure boot in order to qualify for an upgrade.

P.S. Don't forget that a good portion of modern CPU's by both AMD and Intel have TPM 2.0 built in. All that is required is a motherboard update to allow it, if it's not already an option.

I enabled the fTPM option in my BIOS as I already use secure boot. I ran the test and my system is clear to get 11. I also have been testing 11 after the dev update. So far all is OK.

I covered this in post 28. In AMD systems it's called fTPM, on Intel it's called PTT. Almost ALL computers desktop and laptops made since 2017 have this already in the CPU. All you have to do is find it in the BIOS and enable it!

That was a limited time because of the poor quality of 8. It didn't stay free for long..

If I were to revert back to the original on my laptop and all in one pc. It would cost me to upgrade. Which I never do anyways. I always do fresh installs.

Actually it did stay for long. I can, to this day, install windows 7 and upgrade to 8 or 10. Actually Just went from a new install of 7 to 10 about a month ago on a reinstall I did.

I can't remember if this applies to Windows 8.1 but with 10 you are activated one of two basic ways. You have what is known as a SLIC is in the PC's BIOS that tells the OS it is activated OR your Windows account is tied to a digital license. Like the below

I can actually install windows 10 directly into my Dell Latitude 3540 and it will install Windows Pro and activate it without me doing anything because of that SLIC in the BIOS. @ZVar is right, You can upgrade anytime to Windows 10 as long as you have either of the above!

I absolutely refuse to have an online account tied to my desktop operating system. It is just beyond the pale for me.

I know a huge amount of people that only use local accounts. I choose to use an account across several PCs and to date have had no issues. If you are using OEM PCs your OK as long as there is a SLIC in the BIOS. Otherwise, your either going to have to buy a license or deploy a hack!
