That's true. But there is a growing linux community who is trying to bring linux to a more user-friendly point. I use Ubuntu, and have been for just about a year, now. After some initial trepidation, and a bit of web-crawling, I found the current incarnation of Ubuntu fairly easy to switch to. Plus, I love the lack of licensing restrictions. I can take my Ubuntu disc, holding a downloaded and burned copy, and load in onto as many computers as I want, because I actually own my copy of Ubuntu. Can't do that with any of the legal copies of Microsoft operating systems in my desk drawer. I've never understood why, if I buy the operating system, can't I use it any way I desire? Didn't I pay for it? Not according to Microsoft. Per their licensing agreement, I've only paid for the right to use it on one machine.

This is a reason I want to go with a Macbook the next computer I get. Which will be sometime in the next few months. I am so irritated with everything Windows. Windows 7 should be called "Windows: Sucks less than Vista and more than the next Windows Operating system we come up with".

    Kansas Thanks this.

    The Teenager says, again:

He didn't even get a chance to "phone home" like all DRM does.

As for your lump of coal: Windows 7 is the same thing as Vista. Wanna know the two differences? All Windows 7 DirectX Diagnostic screens say this, with "Home Premium" substituted with whatever version is installed with.

Other versions of Windows 7 could read like this:

Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate, Home Basic and the bit, well that's obvious. If you've got 32-bit, it'll say 32. If it's 64-bit, it'll say 64. End of.

I have no need to change anything. My programs are working stable and fine.

Until the smoke clears, nothing will be done.

That makes 2 of us. I have been shopping hard and heavy for a new laptop. After reading all the issues with Windows, I am leaning real hard towards a Mac. Not worrying about virus crap would be a definite bonus too.

I dont really do much except surf the web, jabber on here, and occasionally steal music:biggrin_255:(ooops, did I say that out loud?) mac might not be so bad after all. The price of a mac is about triple the laptops I have been looking at, but if they can save all the head aches...

If all you do is surf the web, jabber on here, and occasionally steal music, then you wouldn't really have any problems with viruses either. The mac-is-better-than-windows-cuz-you-don't-get-viruses argument is tenuous at best too. If you're not stupid on the Internet, you don't end up with virus problems.

I'm not arguing that Apple doesn't make a nice computer - they do - but at a huge premium as anyone who has one has noticed and accepted. If you have the money to spend on it, by all means get one.

Like what? (not accusing, genuinely asking what you foresee having problems with)

I've been running Windows 7 Pro for several months now. The only problem I have had is getting a USB wireless adapter to work because the 2 brands I have tried have not made good drivers for Windows 7 yet. Yes, I will name you Belkin and Netgear.

Other than that, it has been the best OS I have seen MS release "out of the gate" to date in my experience. It boots up from "dark to desktop" in literally 35 seconds. Its been rock-solid, as I have yet to see it have any kind of crash. Whereas my Vista machine takes over 2 minutes and is clunky as can be, though I am not a Vista "hater" as some are. It's just a bloated OS. I do admit that I bought the Pro version because of XP Mode but have only had to use XP Mode for 2 programs so far (that I'm too cheap to buy updated versions for.)

I'd be the first to bash them if I had a different experience with it, but that just hasn't been the case with this one so far. We run machines here in the office with XP, Vista, and Win 7 in order to do tech support regardless of what the driver has, so we get a pretty good sample of all them on a regular basis.

(side note on Macs and viruses: CNet did a large report recently about how most exploits coming out now are browser-based and not operating system based. They found that Macs were just as vulnerable to these as a PC and recommended the same type of security measures for Mac users these days.)

haha, you didnt bother to REGISTER AFTER INSTALL.

LOL microsoft will crash after any install if it cant verify the install online after 90 days.

Its cheap, had it happen to me. Simple fix tho, painful when it happens. The "phone home" indicates its still trying to verify your license.
