This is a picture that shows a power divider switch or Interaxle Differential Lock (the one in the center with the "X" in between the axles) and a Differential Lock (the one on the right with "X's" on each axle). This truck is specced for off road driving, so that's why it has a Differential Lock. Most trucks only have an IAD Lock (power divider) for highway use.
You should only engage the Differential Lock for limited amounts of time at speeds no more than 25 mph. I use this when having to power through thick mud the consistency of snot.
Many folks confuse the operating requirements of IAD Locks with Differential Locks. You can engage the IAD Lock while moving, as long as you aren't in a spin out. You can run at highway speeds. You can keep it on for long periods of time. Our brothers in the great white north engage it in October and disengage it in April.
