My last DD15 generally liked it off, but when it got below about -23 you could hear it was running cold. Made more noise. I would put it on below that temperature and it ran better. But the new winter front I can not completely close off. The CAC still needs some airflow.

Don't they say with these new engines to leave them off?
I've never ran one. Probably should have with my old Detroit freightliner. I managed to get by just fine without.

P.S. Your truck does not feel wind chill.

    Ruthless Thanks this.

Makes me feel a lot warmer and the truck tends to run better at 175 than it does at 125. A light load on flat ground in 15 degree weather and i might as well shut the heater off cause the coolant just won't get warm enough.

Was my first thought, and my second and third. After changing them multiple times thinking i got bad sets, i tested them on the stove before installing them. Final conclusion, a 12.7 combined with the 4 core radiator required to keep it from over hearing on long hard pulls in summer, makes it run cold in winter. Block off some of that grille with a winter front and it runs a little warmer, but forget about counting on the engine for heat while idling. Even bumping it up to 1100 rpm and it barely breaks 125 degrees.

In the extreme cold here, everything gets covered up. Equipment and trucks hate the cold. As long as all the temps stay in check, no problem.

Back in the day the Canadians would show up with their big spec cabovers with a full quilted winter front on. Full width of the truck and bumper to windshield tall......

Can't find a decent picture of one tho...... They were cool !

bzinger, D.Tibbitt and Ruthless Thank this.

I think I have a pic or 2 of a couple COE Petes with those on. I'll see if I can find them on my computer.

Really could have used one of those on my K100. It was just bare metal between me and the wind. Drove around with numb toes pretty often.
