We all run them new or old, it cat, cummins or detroit. most of us has them built and they are quilted and insulated. I only close mine completely when idling. I have to open it a little, no matter how cold the temp is, or it loses enough power to be noticable.
The cabinover I bought has the full quilted cover on it.

Last winter we had three days in a row under -40 degrees (that's without the wind chill). I had my winter front on, no troubles.
Buddy has a 2018 5700 Western Star, as per dealer recommendation, he did not have his winter front on. About 30 miles down the road he had emissions faults and derated. I had him put on his winter front. After 40 minutes every thing cleared up and he was good for the rest of the week.
I find under -15f it helps to have it on, motor sounds cold under that. Above that I take it off.Wheeljack, spsauerland and Oxbow Thank this. -
I HAD to run one on my 2013 4900 Star with a DD15 because if I didn't the air system would be froze all the time with that truck. and it seemed to help the excessive regen issues I had with that particular truck.
But on my new 2020, the Detroit rep told me DO NOT put a winter front on. He said on the new motors it fools the temp sensors into thinking it is warmer out than it really is, and it will cause emission system problems. -
Did you have to buy special “hardware” to install? Bought one but I don’t want to pay $50 for 4 screws
