The AT&T/T-Mobile merge was last year, and it was shot down in December.
MetroPCS is its own company. Virgin Mobile USA and Boost Mobile piggyback off of Sprint.
MetroPCS is in the merger process with T-Mobile. -

Years ago when I started driving, I got a stick through my phone company, Alltel. Then the Alltel service I had was bought out by Verizon, so I got a Verizon stick. Both services were great, unless I happened to be in BFE Montana or Kingman, AZ. I had a falling out with Verizon because of over-billing, and went with T-Mobile for my phone service only, and bought a Virgin Mobile stick. I felt like Virgin Mobile was just as good as Verizon, a little pricier, but good coverage, since I do 48 states. One day at T-Mobile, I got talked into getting their mobile hotspot, and I really hate it. It seems as if their regular phone service and internet coverage has really gone downhill in the past several months, and it's been even more expensive than Virgin. I'm thinking of switching back to Virgin.. I still have the stick.
