    2?

I'm from N. California and a coworker just got hired on to WM

It was (if I'm not mistaken)

    Phone interview
    Face-face interview
    Road test
    Drug test
    Job offer (he accepted)
Then he had to wait until his background check was complete.

Started him off at $28.25/hr (residential driver)

Did 13 years w/ WM. When I started, we were paid by the day. Not uncommon to work 60 hours in 5 days for not a lot of money. Benefits were reasonably priced for a family and the coverage was really good. When switched from day pay to by the hour, work load reduced, hours reduced, expectations for "efficiency" (their term = speed, my term) were cranked up. Oh, but don't try to go too fast cuz outward/inward facing camera, gps with location and speed reports were always looking to see if you were going over 10mph while helper on back. Rule book as thick as The Bible, you will sign, sign, sign that you were told, agree, understand..... Sites are usually understaffed. Shops are usually understaffed. Repairs to equipment always seems to be lagging. You are never done. Completed your run, good!, go help someone else. Why did I stay? Work every day without question. Never ending supply of garbage. Unable to beat the benefits for my family with a 10' pole in my area. Pay every Friday. No bounced checks, no here's your check wait till Tues to deposit bullcrap. Why did I leave? Like the scores of guys I watched for years before me.... "The Bible" always wins. Truck cameras, managers following you to "observe" your work, the infamous independent 3rd party company that is hired by WM to drive around in an unmarked vehicle video taping you while you work. In summary, just like OTR, you will not be there much for your family, you will be always asked to do "more", you will be continually scrutinized/monitored/observed, you will be micro managed more than anyone ever thought possible with garbage.
