Wolfman Cb Shop in Ga, stay away.

That goes beyond a laugh but what radio is he talking on ??? He says it's a old radio and no telling how long ago it was worked on. Sounds like crap anyway you look at it... AND I WOULD SAY THE NEAREST DUMPSTER SHOULD BE LOOKED FOR OR SOUGHT AFTER.........

 

Wolfman and his employees are only as good as you get for certain things. Some are good with coax. Others with a Mic issue or repair. Another for swr check/set.....As far as working on my radio or radios it's not gonna happen at least with me. Its to each his own it's a crap shoot I'd say. Their pretty high priced there. But If you need it and its there and don't want to keep chasing it down like many of us have done for a certain item. You'll buy it.....

 

His partner that parted ways and opened up Sunrise CB ( he was on this forum briefly) sounds pretty good when I hear him on skip, doesnt necessarily mean that his work is better than wolfman but his radio sounds good to me.

 

Ridgeline is correct when he says skip doesn't mean anything. Lots of guys talk skip but are unable to talk more than 15 miles with 1000 watts. However, range means everything, so if you happen to hear somebody 100 miles before you get to them and 100 miles after you pass them (plus everywhere between) then everything else will fall into place, and you're likely to hear them via skip on a regular basis also.

 

Understand that Rabbi, I wasnt necessarily referring to the distance but rather the audio quality of his radio.

 

Skip is nature and the conditions. I talked to a man in Detroit when I was in Merced cali. On a 350 watt radio that was hooked to a 1600 watt linear that wasn't even on. Probably could've talked to him on a S980 without the amp stuck up underneath it.. Its all about your radio ---If you can't talk 15 miles on a 1000watts your equipment sucks your tech sucks and you don't have a clue what your doing....

 

Back about 2000, at the peak of Solar Cycle 23, on good days, I used to talk all over the world with a 25w RadioShack 10-meter SSB rig and a cut-down CB mag-mount on the car. I also worked something like 125 countries from the home station using a 5w Yaesu FT-817, but most of those were using CW (Morse). It's all about propagation. Tonight, here at the bottom of Cycle 24, the only DX I've heard is my old buddy Jorge, EA8TL, out on the Canary Islands and a handful of South Americans. I sometimes keep a panadaptor open on the CB band with my Flex 6500 SDR....receive only out of the ham bands...and when I see the skip starting to roll on CB, I'll open another pan on 10m to look for activity there, but unless there's a contest going on, I seldom see more than 2 or 3 signals.

 

I find it intriguing that during skip conditions there are certain locations around the country that seem to work best. My company has a terminal in Sioux Falls Sd and when Im there I never seem to have trouble making contacts to my friends in Bradenton Fl using a 4 watt stock Cobra 29 or BC 980, and also when Im in North Platte Ne that area seems to be a sweet spot as well. My travels also take me ip to Paw Paw Mi quite often and skip always seem to run back and forth from the wolverine state and the sandpile.

 

The Florida panhandle is good also in Wyoming on 80...... I 8 in cali. Too.

 

Bored, you are correct on those skip conditions. Around the mid 70's when I was a young teenager I was on my big brothers 3 watt Lynx 23 radio and using a 300 watt amp, talking to a guy 6 states away. After awhile he said I was sounding fuzzy. So I turned off the amp and he said I was nice and clear sounding. As a kid that kind of blew me away. I learned a good lesson about band conditions that day.
