Hi, Wondering if it would be possible to run o/o Mon-Thurs using load boards. Then go back to work at regular job on weekends working 36 hrs. Getting paid for 40. I would be able to keep my benefits and prepare for driving full time after retiring in a few years. Think it would work?

Maybe , but you could only run 34 hours . Your 36 hours count as on duty hours against the 70 hours allowed in 8 days .

What brand used truck would you recommend and year model for someone starting out? Also, what mileage truck would you recommend?

Anything is possible if you're determined you don't wish to see retirement due to dying from physical exhaustion.

I thought transitioning into o/o trucking would be better than just jumping in head first. The line of work I'm in now pays well. But is so simple, theres no challenge. For a person that likes a challenge, sure makes it tough.

Trucking is an expensive hobby. Between plates & permits, insurance, truck note, and all of the other fixed expenses (expenses that are the same each month whether you work the truck or not) you're going to have, you aren't likely to find rates high enough consistently enough to make it worth your while to do it "part time"...especially just starting out.

Would you recommend that I find a local trucking co.. Maybe to fill in for those days I'm off work. Be less expensive and still get the expierence.

Working strictly off loadboards and having to get back home at a certain time so you can work the weekend non driving job puts you at the mercy of either taking whatever rate is available to get home or eating a lot of deadhead. Neither being an ideal option and your bottom line will suffer terribly because of it. You need to be flexible chasing rates and I have found leaving Sunday afternoon and going home Friday costs me a lot of money. What works best for me is staying out 8 or 10 days then taking a 3 or 4 day "weekend" whenever. Don't think this will work for you unless you get lucky and score some regular direct freight out and back in, a perfect world sort of deal..

I see, I called a loadboard the other day, just to see what loads were paying in a certain direction. He quoted .81 cpm. I realized then the brokers must make a load of money. I can't figure how anyone could make a profit for less than 1.50/mile.

The best loads never make the boards . Brokers call the carriers they have a good working relationship with and give them the loads
