Retirement isn't working. Re-entering industry. Finishing up school. Time to apply to selected companys. It's been 12 years since I drove so I only need to report three years. Quit last job 7/2/2010. Lived on savings 11 months & started collecting SS benefits 6/15/1011 till now. From what I have heard this situation will raise flags when I apply to drive. What proof can I provide that will satisfy requirements?

I couldn't see listing retirement as being a red flag.
I was disabled for 3 years but didn't seek disability pay so there was no official proof other than from doctors which they never asked for. I didn't work for a year after that being unable to find work once I was healthy again. That was 4 years total of no employment up to the time I started driving. It never really was a problem for me.
It always seems like it's the biggest of the mega carriers that have any problems with it which is even more reason not to go them. -

You only have to account for the time. Some may ask for proof. Which you have.
So no problem. -
along with proof from doctors you'll need references from the day you stopped working to continouisly thru to each day you apply until you go back to work. that is what i have been told by more than 4 companies. best of luck. i've only been out of work taking care of my husband and the house since October 2011 and i'm being told i'm not eligible for hire. makes a person feel ...well like ####.but keep records as current as possible, and see what ya can slide with.

Those types of gaps are easy to fill.
2 ways. One as you stated. The other by using a "now" closed business as a filler.
Had a company do that once to fill a gap I had.
They just need it for their records, so they can say they done what was required of them. If a "former" employer is no longer in business, oh well. Can't very well call and confirm, can they?Bayou_baby Thanks this. -
I know when i had taken time off for family or for my husbands health issues, it cost me. but not complaining, just need to ask. "If a company goes out of business and they write out & sign a notarized statement that they are going out of Business, not firing you. Why would that hold against your employabilty? C. Bean shutdown and i have such a letter. but having trouble getting a job. because of this letter and time off the road for my husbands illness. any ideas how to fancify the terminology on an application?

I suspect there's more to it than just your time off.
A lot of companies frown on breaks longer than 3 months now days. My friends wife was off 6. Her prior employer, who she used to train for, wanted her to spend a few weeks with a trainer.
Keep checking. Any company that doesn't want you, with your experience, because you took time off to be with your sick husband. Isn't worth working for anyway.
Funny how these companies refer to their working relationship with the drivers as family. But fail miserably when it comes to your REAL family.MNdriver and Bayou_baby Thank this. -

But fail miserably when it comes to your REAL family.<<<my words exactly. man just about ready to go off on some but ya know the recruiters dont get a hire they dont get their commission and you don't get a job. like the general public needs to learn about how the hiring process goes for all truck drivers and then the public needs to get in hang on and handle one of these trucks... the dispatchers boss(owner or safety personnel) need to get on the line with the drivers in place of the recruiters,,and handle their jobs for two weeks.
