All you need to say is that you took care of your dad during that time... They will more then likely ask you to get a few letters from references to verify that you actually was taking care of your dad at the time and your on your way..

I was hoping for some advice on any companys that will hire me with no work history. I am in a CDL class now should be getting it the first week of april. I worked for my mom as a data entry clerk for her hospital contract for three years. I applied at a couple companys so far only werner got back to me and the women told me without tax doucuments "W2" they couldnt veirfy my empolyment and therefore me. So now I am a little scared about not being able to find work before the loan payments start. I cant seem to find a "regular job". I really want to do OTR but will take what ever I can find to get started.

I was kinda in your same boat 3 years ago. I walked into the South Bend, IN TDI school and the recruiter told me that I had to have at least 3 years of verifiable work history or no trucking co would touch me. I am assuming the industry was better off back then as was the economy.
At the time I didn't have any work history. I had spent the last 5 years....yes 5 years taking care of my grandfather and grandmother until my grandfather passed away.
So not wanting to start my life at McDonalds I took a welding class. Did great and got a job and kept it for 3 years 2 months. My grandmother passed away towards the end of that 3 years and I went back into that school in south bend and this time they let me in. I passed my background, employment, credit, and physical.
Graduated with a 95% GPA and Class A CDL. Now I am execpted at Gordon Trucking for orientation and I am just waiting to hear back on a date for when it will begin.
I was happy as a welder, but my calling is driving a truck or at least life on the road. My dad did it for 20 years until he died. My grandparents and I lived on the road every summer for 3 months during school break. Granted we lived in a small motor home (like a van with a camper attached) for the first few years then upgraded to a 34' Class A Bounder. (mansion on wheels!)
My advice is to either get some W-2 verification for your work or go with a temporary career for at least 3 years. Sounds tough and it is, dont just settle for McD's try some other way like I did. I learned how to weld for $175 in a local highschool that was being sponsored in part by Indiana Workone and P.A.C.E. My first year as a welder I made roughly 23,000 then year two I made 28,000 and this last year I made 34,000 and I only invested $175 for a basic welding class and then $250 for an advanced welding class and I was certified 6G w/ MIG.
TDI in south bend, in lets you quit the first week and not owe them a dime. (I thought about it after learning about the DOT, had never heard of what they can and will do to truckers)
There is my 2 cents, its all up to you. -
I started school with a company who offers CDL instruction. I filled out all the normal forms on day one, and on day two took the drug screen and physical. They put me on med hold because I was on a particular prescription medicine that this carrier had a company policy against. I only made it a day and a half before the med hold, and I was never paid anything, loaned any money, nor signed any loan contracts.
In the interim, I did some more homework and I have changed my mind and want to try another company with CDL training. I read on a website of dubious reliability somewhere that if you go to orientation at a company, even if you weren't hired or didn't sign up or whatever, that you must still list that company as a previous employer on all future employment applications. This website said that was because even if you only show up for one day, the company who's orientation you are attending must report to DAC that you were an employee, and if you failed or had a refusal to drug test. Is this true?
So will Company #2 know that I went to school for a day and a half? Will the results of my physical with Company #1, ie the med hold, be listed on my DAC? When filling out an application/forms for Company #2, do I have to show Company #1 as a previous employer even though I wasn't hired or even allowed to train for my CDL?
Is going to a company CDL school the same as going to orientation as far as the DAC reporting is concerned?
Before I get blasted by all you old timers out there in cyberspace for trying to pull a fast one or being less than truthful, I should also mention that at the time I was put on med hold I was already on a program from my personal doc to taper off of the medicine that Company #1 prohibited. I have since been off this medicine for a couple of weeks. I'd also like to mention that I don't do drugs, didn't fail the drug screen, and other than this one issue that is strictly a company policy issue, I comply with all DOT physical requirements in every way. Including this med they put me on med hold for-it is not listed anywhere on any list I have ever been able to locate, and I did my homework....lots of it.Last edited: Sep 10, 2009

Now that IS a good question. What you might want to do, is to explain what happened to the recruiter, before you fill out an application. Or, if you have already filled one out, tell the recruiter about this at your first contact with them.
This shows that you have "nothing to hide," and also may save you a lot of time and trouble if they have the same policy. No point in getting to another orientation, only to be sent home for the same reason. -

To me work history means a job where you get paid. I would just answer the questions as they ask them. I don't believe that other website simply because not all companies use the DAC system. Just explain what happened but it just doesn't make sense to list a school as a job.

What you posted makes since GH. I agree that it should never show up as a "work history." However, since it was a "company school," who knows what kind of crap they may put out about the OP. They shouldn't put out anything, but...

Well that is interesting to say the least, and like these guys have said...be truthful and just tell the recruiter. They can't legally report anything on a DAC unless they hired you...you never worked for them and can sue them if they report any false info on it. I went thru 5 weeks of training and wasn't "hired" until I got into my own truck. There's usually a spot on a app for a "school" listing.
