Thanks for your advice guys. It's great to be able to call on some experience....someone seems always to have been there, done that.

How in depth do trucking companies go regarding your previous employers??

I have been in the corporate America world for about 6 years now, but I have jumped around some as well during this time. I have done well at most places and a couple that I just didn't feel like a fit.

I have had 2 layoffs in the past 4 years and have another 2 jobs that just didn't work out to what I thought was poor management and no room for growth, so I quit. On the resume, one may think that I'm a job hopper, but I've been in sales and it seems that a lot of sales peeps have moved around. And I can have both companies that laid me off vouch for it. I have come to the realization that I'm not happy in a cubical environment and I need to try something I've always been intrigued with....trucking.
I'm just worried about what it looks like on paper which does not reflect my work ethic or performance.

I have an spotless criminal record, clean driving record with 0 accidents and no tickets in past 3 years.

    Any thoughts??

Most companies use this rule of thumb; 10 jobs in 10 years Max.

Hi, I was wondering if recent work history is a must. I've been going to college for the last 4 years continuously and have never failed a course, overall gpa is a 2.7 I had a 3.0 last semester and currently I have a 3.6 this semester and I've been having trouble finding any sort of job what so ever. I don't have a degree even though I am a senior. It's just the school is cutting back on course offerings spreading my graduation out 2 years which I can't do as I can't afford it. I hadn't worked since high school where I worked for geek squad but I have done volunteer work.

I've had various interviews but none with a job offer. I'm to the point of where I am applying for overnight stocking in a grocery store. Mind you I am nearly a college grad with volunteer experience during college.

Literally my driving record is perfect. 1 non at fault/non avoidable accident due to the other person who was issued a ticket. I had a ticket for 10 over that was erased due to defensive driving. I have never had any legal issues/criminal stuff either.

I was wondering if any trucking companies are willing to hire me or if work experience is mandatory. I hear different things but I'm not sure how to get into the industry.

I've applied at various companies as I don't know that I will be able to fund schooling totally.

I've tried calling the workforce commission in a couple areas for the WIA grant and they have yet to respond to my 6 messages left over the past few weeks.

So is work history very important in getting a job in the trucking industry?
Any insight or glimpse of hope would really be appreciated.

I would totally advise against making up a "work history" . This is about your integrity and honestly, if they find you to be less than honest , you would not only loosing an opportunity but, your reputation and maybe eventually self esteem would suffer greatly.

Any work would add up to work history, the only thing a work history really does is show reliability and ability to adapt - move on and gain more skills as you go. You would be selling yourself terribly short by being dishonest.

Oh, and some Trucking Company's have people reading these forums, I'm sure!

Be careful and think twice before you fudge anything! These things catch up with you.

College is a type of History. Volunteering speaks of your character and your good driving record is a plus. When you fill out any application your Education does account for something...You have nothing to loose by inquiring and applying. All they can do is tell you what you may need to apply.

    Good Luck out there:)

Krisjack. Should you choose to lie to get a job don't be surprised if they ask you to leave and then report that to a 3rd party like DAC. Once that reporting takes place it will be a long time before you drive.

You will be better served by hitting the streets & trying hard the right way. And that will make you a better driver. Eventually, you will get your chance.

Silentlysailing: Your time in school would be well documented & thus your time in the last four years is accounted for. That is what the trucking companies want to do - account for your time and thus hire someone who says & is who they say they are.

If you really want to drive then go to one of the big companies and have them train you. You will have to stay with them for a couple of years after that, but you will have a job. Also, given that you are almost a college graduate - once you have industry experience you will be able to write your own ticket. Guess what; you are just one step away from success.
