Employers generally are afraid of applicants with worker comp in their background. Find out EXACTLY what is and is not documented in the records and that is the explanation. DON'T confuse a job application for a confessional where you get more credit for everything thing you mention. They are judging if you are a good driver. The longer your story the less they will mark you as OK.

Suing means proving that there is a liability to the injured worker. That is simply not the case. It is presumed compensable in exchange for losing the right to sue. There are affirmative defenses, such as AOE/COE, arising out of employment, Course of Employment. A worker has a fatal heart attack at work, it's compensable. Slipped and fell at a shipper? Compensable.
In your friend's case, his employer and attorney may have felt that terminating his employment was necessary, and I don't know his details, but it is not necessary in order to settle by way of stipulations, and for the attorney to collect his fees.
