Working for Wal-Mart: A Review

Congrats on getting rolling! I’m still on a 5/2 with a Sat @ 1300 out. We’ve had some 5/2-5/3s come up for bid, but I can’t do late gate times that cause overnight runs. So I’ll stick with what I’ve got for now.

Getting ready to apply to either Seymour (GM) or Gas City (Grocery) for the second time.
1. How long does it take to get a night shift in Seymour?
2. Which one provides the higher annual salary assuming 5-2 + extending + doing my best while focusing on safety and efficiency
3. Can new drivers who have accrued 4 weeks PTO realistically take it all at once? Does it need to be spread out?
4. Does being on vacation and using PTO affect/reduce ADP?

The bloom is off the rose, at least for now.
And with that loss of brilliance comes an understanding as to why drivers from other DCs dislike ours so much.

Without going into detail, let’s just say it has sucked all week. Apparently I’m the single-stop whipping boy, which will not last.

After tomorrow I’m off the next nine days to get married and close on a house. I’ll see how things are when I return. But I’m not driving 100 miles to work for what has been going on here lately.

 

1) you'd have to ask a driver at either one. It's probably not going to take long at either one I'd guess.

2) Either one will make money just pick what you want grocery or gm. GM will be the easier money with less headaches.

3) You can use PTO however you want to take it.

4) No, taking PTO and saftey days pays your ADP and protects it. It's when you start taking days off without any PTO to cover that your ADP will drop.

 

It's the same with ours and all the GM flow thrus hate coming to us to help out when they get sent in. They don't ever have to deal with the wait time doing GM like they do with us they get dispatched and hours used efficiently. Some of it is also length of hauls they don't like our short runs. It happens, grocery has some warts. We do have most of the stores we service back into shape after years of ignoring contract drivers ringing the buzzer to be let in, they still do it at some places, but not as bad as when I first started just after WM kicked out the contract carrier.

All that said it's head and shoulder better work and pay than any OTR job and the "headaches" almost quaint by comparison. The perks are better than anywhere else hands down too. Hang in there bro don't do something you'll end up regretting. Guaranteed you're mostly just burnt out and some time off will help.

 

Of course, you’re dead on. I just get frustrated with this warehouse. Practically all automated, but keeps breaking down. Seems to happen on a weekly basis.

Today was a far better day. Might even be able to salvage the week with a good day tomorrow, but I’m really hoping to escape a little early to get rested up Wednesday. Nuptials are Thursday evening.

 

At my DC we're in the middle of a 3 year construction project building a massive new automated warehouse just like the one you've already got. Hopefully the kinks and bugs get worked out but I'll be surprised. Worst case you can always transfer to another DC.

 

It would have to get really bad for me to transfer. Many drivers have transferred to here. I really like the people and the drivers here. I suspect I can ride it out for my goal of three years.
