well i will say that Dollar General & the Family Dollar dedicated accounts are ### busting work and also include hazardous driving areas, i mean have you ever noticed where most of those stores are located? Not exactly in areas where 73' trucks are designed to travel let alone maneuver and back up, hence the rollers/rollatainers needed to get the product through the small delivery doors around back that were designed for a straight box truck (they dont have semi truck "docks"). And once you get there, expect to be pimped out for about 8-10 hrs of manual labor to unload the entire trailer at which works out to ~$9 hr straight time, about $15 hr less than what a normal dockworker would make without considering overtime. Nice way for Werner to skirt around the labor laws by prostituting its federally exempt CDL drivers out as cheap laborers.

I think bob would say wheres your positive attitude? I will say this I worked for werner for a year If I had to do dollar genereal or family dollar I might as well get a job ot home . 1 I would get paid better 2 I would b home all the time. I like doing 48 states when I drove for them. Just talked to another guy that frove for them and he says they are trying to get rid of 48 staters at least the solo drivers. Well keep your wheel on the pavement your eyes on the road and your cell phone in your pocket:biggrin_255:

Well today I had kind of a rough day and a lesson learned. Sunday night I was scheduled to split a load out of the Atlanta drop yard for Monday morning. Since I was so close to home I called the dispatch and asked if I could drop my trailer off and go home for the night since the load wasn't due till 7:00 Monday evening. His words were, I don't care as long as you get the load there by the ascribed time. I bobtailed home. Monday morning around 8am I was taking my laundry out to the truck and I saw a message on the qualcom. It said my load was canceled and I was scheduled to swap a load at 7am out of Atlanta going to NC.

WHAM! It hit me. I'm in a bit of a fix. I called dispatch and got my first tongue lashing.:biggrin_2551::biggrin_2551: :biggrin_2553::biggrin_2553:I had to get down to Atlanta, pick up my trailer, come back to the swap sight , then take the load to Charlotte by 3pm. Guess what? I made it with 10 minutes to spare.

I'm not being negative because it was my fault completely. No one likes being threatened with a write up but I learned a lesson. If you do anything at all like that, then ask over the qualcom. I was made to feel very uncomfortable when I was getting my talking to but I did put them in a position of letting down the customer. When you take any time away from your truck use the correct macro and log off correctly. Put in an on duty time when you will be available and send it over the qualcom. Then you won't have to worry about it. If they deny your request, at least it's in writing.

When I called dispatch, the first question he asked was, "When were you due back on duty", and since I never went off duty I should have been checking my messages. My bad! I had no excuses other than I'm wrong, sorry. So there it is.

Now I could rant on about how the dispatcher disrespected me but he was there all night and who knows what's on his mind or going on in his life. So fortunately I was on time, but I will never let that happen again.

Lesson learned. I love this job. :yes2557::biggrin_25526::biggrin_25526:

Bob, I am starting school in a few weeks and have a Pre-Hire letter from Werner. Just wanted to check with you to see if you are still happy with them. I like You, have a positive attitude and know the grass is not greener on the other side of the tracks.

Will you rethink your career move if Bob comes back on and says he changed his mind after he got dicked again? I have lost track of the drivers on the forums and in RL that told people how great the job was and by the time they hired on they were gone. When I started driving (not for werner) a returning driver was annoyed with my good attitude and said "its fun the first six weeks then pretty well sucks after that".

No, I will still pursue this as my new career. I need to work and am tired of sitting around with absolutely no luck looking for a new job.

    Bob,
This has been a great thread. I am 50, just graduated from driving school and now I am looking for a job. I am changing careers coming out of the computer/networking field. I think your attitude is fantastic. I try to also look at the bright side of things in life. A recruiter from Werner came to class and said everything you want to hear. Made it sound great. Thanks again for your feedback on Werner as it gives us a different picture other than all the negative posts. Drive Safe

Bob, thanks for your posts. I came from the IT world, worked for IBM for 22 years and now I love to drive a truck. I always think that having a positive attitude is half the battle. Its amazing that if you load on time, unload on time and talk with dispatch and your DM with a civil tongue you will get the miles and be treated with respect, just my 2c.
