OK, so you got me thinking on that one.

I am looking to book a load from WA to TX for an over-weekend run. Got another driver I want to meet up with if the rates are right down in TX. As of tonight, we are both in MN. We happen to live about 5 miles from each other and both drive.

He's headed to TX and back to MN and back to TX by the time I get the truck picked up and loaded out of WA.

I either get a trip permit to go through OR or I go down US 95 in ID. US 95 is coded White.

That part north of Riggins looks to be an interesting 50 miles or so.

Last time I was there, about 2 1/2 years ago it was still the old truckstop. Late night, fog set in, pulled in, had "greasy spoon" breakfast. :D Haven't stopped in since...usually just going past.

back in about 1994 +/-,i was driving a log truck.r model mack, double frame, single stack,300 mack, basically all mack.man you can't beat'em for in and out of the woods hauling ultra heavy loads.the skidder in the front and a skidder in the rear pulling and pushing you thru the mud type loads.

anyhoo, headed nw toward stevenson,al. and the woodyard there, coming from rome,ga.Hwy 48 thru summerville, turns into al40 at line, hwy 117 splits right toward ider,al.i had a HEAVY load and the mack had the covered front brakes and fairly worn rear brakes.no jake.

there is a truck runaway ramp as you descend and i went into it.i could tell that i was going to need it as i started downhill.just had that feeling.i was praying that i would not hit anyone and that i could make it to the runaway truck ramp.ramp is made up of loose gravel, pea sized, and does the job.i hit it at what felt like a good clip speed wise but who knows.i was terrified.i had downshifted to where the tach was pegged, noises of all kinds from everywhere, standing on the non-existent brakes,yelling/hollering i am sure.

the ramp did its job.i calmed down and checked my drawers.not really but it was full panic mode for a bit.walking around and assessing the situation,i decided to go ahead and deliver the load.heck,i was about 4-5 miles if that from the mill.I asked that no one come up on me as i re-entered the road.THAT'S RIGHT.I was able to drive out of that ramp somehow.it sits fairly level to the hwy and for whatever reason,i was able to drive out of the pit.tandems locked in and lots of spinning but i did ease across the grass/gravel and back onto the pavement.

prayers answered and NOT a single soul drove up behind me or uphill.I CRAWLED down what was left of that hill.delivered the load.headed back toward summerville and the shop where the man that owned the logging outift kept the equipment.made it back to the cross road of hwy 71/117,flatrock,al.,and the whole truck shook and i heard and felt the transmission explode, ball bearings and whatever went everywhere.i coasted the truck onto a very wide spot of the road, got on the CB and asked a driver for a ride into summerville.got one.took my CB and small amount of needed items for driving a local log truck.left the truck right there.made it to the yard and told the owner what happened.he knew the truck was worn out anyway.he told he'd give me a call when he got it repaired.he did too.

so that is my worst mtn contribution.never underestimate a downhill road/hwy especially if they have a runaway truck ramp on them.those 2 laners can be quite scary.OH YEAH.the load grossed out at 96,000+ if my memory serves me well.many mills will not accept loads that heavy now days but that was back then-

True, it is a walk in the park, Except for all of the rubber neckin RV's and canoeing, Kayaking people and bicyclers, this time of the year. lol

Also one other thing that DOES NOT affect you box guys, BUT there is OR WAS a limit on rear load overhang on that road, I believe it was not more than 15' from center of rear axle to end of load.

Yes, I was dinged for it several years ago.
