worst thing about flatbeds

Well ya. You don't get the joy of tarping.

 

No doors to close. Makes it really hard to be lazy. I like jumping out in my flip flops and closing two doors and then being on my way. I used to do flatbed and some oversized loads and its such a pain securing some of the loads. Also forklift operators will never put anything where you tell them to. Wish I could just load it myself most times. Pros. Less waiting time to load and unload compared to vans/reefers. More money per mile plus the option of doing over size for more money. No temperatures to check or fuel for the trailer.

 

I never understood why a ladder isn't legally required. Any other job site would be required to have a ladder. I was going to weld one onto my last job but I quite before I could. Work smarter not harder.

 

Don't drive across Wyoming, your trailer will become a flatbed again. You'll need to throw tarps again.

This OLDer than Dirt skateboard hand comes up and offers his tools and how dare he teach me a trick to save time.
Now I get these stalker calls checking on me, making sure I'm on the straight and narrow. I've paid it forward a hundred times This past year.

Just started flatbed bout 2 months ago for swift I come from a van company and wanted the experience.. I regret it. Yah I make a entire penny more a mile than van guys but my first time going home my equipment got ransacked by other drivers.. I ended up being late for my load when I came back to get re equipped I went from platinum to bronze that moment... my back always hurts I'm 6 4 and there's so much bending over for chains and so on.. my back muscles are always fd up especially my shoulders.. basically always in pain.. but now that I'm bronze I tend to not work long days I have nothing to lose but a job I hate now going bronze cost me like 150 a week all cause other swift employees are thieves.. this don't happen to van drivers..

 

I think the problem isn't the kind of trailer you pull, but the co. you do it for.

I like my curtain van, but I really miss the satisfaction I get from loading a weird-ugly complicated load, getting it properly secured and putting a "Christmas present" tarp job on it. Anybody can close the doors and drive away, to be a quality open deck guy, you have to have some intelligence and common sense along with the muscle. Especially for OS/OW.
