Hi all, been lurking for a while now, both without being a member and being one. Thought I would ask a couple question's on what you would do if you were in my shoes...
I've recently turned 21 years of age, have been trucking since the day I turned 18. Logged north of 250k miles over my career pulling food grade tanks within the state of AR. I know trucking-of course to an extent-and have always thought about being an Owner operator my whole life. Think maybe its time to tuck my ears back and jump in.
The truck in question, is a 06 Pete exhd, stand up. 550 horse Cat in front of an 18sp with 3.36 running gears all at a little over 600k miles, no motor work, new clutch, knee deep in rubber and stacked with brakes. 2 owner truck, second owner got the truck at 72k miles. Very meticulously taken care of pre-emission truck. Asking price on the truck is 40k.
Truck comes with a job, hook to his hopper bottom, pulling within the state with the occasional out of state run. Very rare to go out of the 250 mile radius.
Pay varies from load to load, but a friend of mine, pulling for him, says its between 1.92 a running mile to as high as 2.50 a running mile. That being said its mainly short runs, 2-3 trips a day within the state to various locations. Any where between 4-600 miles a day.
The truck is gonna make money I believe, why I'm even considering buying a truck at 21 years old, is because it comes with a job. Which everybody knows, if your not 23 or have OTR experience, your basically out of luck. Payment on the truck would be around 7-1000 a month, so if everything goes south, I could just park the truck and make the payments. Trailer rent is 275 a week, with insurance being around 700 a month, for 40k on the truck, 30k on the trailer, million liability, and 25k cargo.
Would you go for it? Couple owner operators I know said they would, although a 40k dollar truck is hard to swallow for your first truck, but they all say, if it comes with a job, and you can get along with the guy, they would go for it.
Another thing thats been bugging me, that everybody I've talked to has suggested, seeing how the truck would basically stay in the state of AR pulling unfinished farm product, that I run a commercial farm tag, pay the heavy road tax, and go to trucking. They also say I can pay for say, a 72 hr permit to run to surrounding states, etc.
One thing that scares me, is to me, thats tax evasion, and nobody wants the IRS, or uncle sam to pay them a visit.
Getting my authority, is no problem at all, but some say go this route, while other say authority is the only way to go.
**I've got plenty of startup money, I'm just weighing my options and soaking up the advice**
No problems at my current workplace, pay is well, just heres my chance is all.
I would just like a little more advice, what you would do, or what you wouldn't do. Also sorry for the long post, I just don't want to make a huge mistake, at such a young age.
Thanks for reading guys and gals.

No. You're buying this guy's overhead and more than making his trailer payment. If it's so profitable he'd keep it.

Why wouldn't this guy just hire you to drive the truck? Probably because it's a better deal for him to get you to buy it.

First off a over head is just a valve and jake adjustment and it is not expensive .
The motor if it is a good one like mine has been will go 1.2 million or more before a rebuild .

If it was me I would jump on it like a duck on a june bug !!!
But I love being an owner op .

You are young enough that if it does bite you in the as you can still recover from it and learn a helk of allot .
If you do get you own authority then you wont be tied down to just hauling for him anyway.

I would look into buying a trailer as soon as i could because 275 a week is 14,300 a year and you can buy one for less than that buy a whole bunch !!!
If you really want to be an owner op the only way to it is to just do it because there is no perfect time in life for anything like right now .

So you can put me down for one go for it vote .

I'm sorry, I'm not trying to kill anyones dream, but I've read and reread your post at least 5 times thinking I missed something, as far as the truck goes there is way to many questions and tests to determine if thats a good deal or not. But as far as the "job" goes I cant see anything remotely good about it, unless its a rent to own deal. Just in rent alone your paying 14,300.00 a year, thats out right robbery unless it your trailer at the end of the first year. Then there is the part about where You insure HIS trailer and HIS cargo and pay for HIS liability insurance. I would tell him I'll do the "job" for 70% of the gross + FSC and I'll insure mine and he can insure his. I've been trucking longer than I can remember and have owned my own tractor for the last 12-13 years and I'm no expert by any means, but unless I'm missing something what you've described in my opinion is about as close to financial suicide as you can get.

Without a deep dive on the details, it seems like an ok deal. Not great. Just ok.

My only question to you is: What is Plan B? Farm trucking isn't exactly steady year-round. Add to that, your exempt registration and age will further limit your options.

Ask your insurance agent what your premium would be to run under your own authority and look into the cost of regular apportioned plates. Compare that to the running cost of downtime when the farms aren't producing and see where you're cost tolerance is. And yeah, negotiate that trailer rental down or go get your own. $1100 a month is outrageous.

As others mention, at 21 you're options to run under someone else's authority will be limited.

Not sure about AR, but in SC, you can only run farm tags on a semi if it is YOUR FARM, and YOUR CARGO that you are moving. What you are talking about is for hire cargo.

The Pete sounds like a good buy but the rest of the deal stinks. You can make payments on a new trailer for less than 275/wk and insurance sounds high unless it is for your own authority.

And what are "running" miles? All actual miles or just loaded miles or book miles?

Don't be too eager, this guy sees you are young and eager and is gonna use that to his advantage.

I wouldn't pay anything to use his trailer to haul his cargo. I might counter offer with "I'm happy where I am but I can offer you cash for the truck. I'll pay my own insurance but I can't pay you to pull your freight in your own trailer."

Then you need to think about some written agreement that protects you if the miles go away or he kills the deal soon after....like the other guy said...what is plan B?
