Mr.Robert, there are 2 things i would like to draw your attention too.

1°you have had back and neck problems.Do you think it is wise to drive a older rougher truck?

2°your heavy haul work will take you into ports.Do you think it is wise to buy a truck with a engine that cannot go to Cali ports?(or any other area's that will change their laws in the near future?)
Taking into account that the last good CAT's were pre EPA07 engines.

Maybe your interest would be better served if you buy a new daycab with the specs you want and then put the sleeper on it you like.
And i do believe you can find big sleepers for sale in the secondhand market.

20y is a very long time in trucking laws and regs.

    But your truck..............your choices.

If your going to stick to your specs you might as well buy new . You'll never find a used truck like that. And by the time you rebuild one to those specs you'll spend way more than a new truck anyway.

If you loosen up those specs you would have some options.....

Pull the body , install a 60-72" sleeper and your on your way.

P.S. Don't know how long you've been off the road. But a lot has changed. And with a truck (and work) like that you're jumping into the deep end........

Probably not, but maybe they tend to keep them 20 years...

Lighten up, Francis. I thought it was funny, and so intended. How long is it going to take to find/modify your custom rig... a year?

The Starter truck I have found that I like is a 2010 model,So it is pretty up to date,And I dont really have a desire to go to California. When I said 20 years I was talking about keeping the truck I bought and build for a long while,Not buying a 20 year old truck to start with. I may go for a Glider and remount the Sleeper and accssories that go with it. But I have no interest in going back out in a 63" Sleeper truck. I have been home a couple of years,But have kept up with all the new laws and regulations and have many driver friends that help keep me informed. The main Problem is I lost my contacts at my direct shippers because for the most part my previous contact person there is no longer employed there. It is a tough decision, I want a certain truck on top of the frame.Partially because the children are all grown and moved out and the wife is going with me full time so I need to make things comfortable for her as well as me. And I need a certain type of under carriage under my truck based on the work I plan on doing. I picked up 1 new direct shipper last night that originates less than 75 miles from my house and has continueos over dimensional loads that will require my 8 axles and the wife in a escort vehicle,If this works out one of these a week 4 times a month will be all I want to do.It will come to me,I just have to figure it out.

A new Peterbilt speced out like this with a large sleeper is between 250,000.00 and 300,000.00. I think I can buy the truck I found with the Sleeper and Engine and Transmission in it and change the frame rails and rear ends and front axle and springs for a lot less than that. I really cant hold the third axle against the truck as it is hard to find a truck with a third axle and impossible to find one with a third axle and a big sleeper. It should not take more than 60 days to put this together,The frame rails come pre-drilled to my wheelbase and have to be slide in after the old ones are out. I have had this done before and they billed me 40 hours for the whole job. My situation shouldnt be any harder, they will unolt the existing rear ends and bolt in the new 46,000# rears that the frame was drilled for when the rails were made. The same with the steer axle. If they can unbolt 2 frame rails from the radiator, hood hinges, wiring harness, engine mounts cab mount, battery boxes, fuel tanks.sleeper, rear ends and bolt 2 new ones in and it takes 40 hours,How could this job take that much more? I have built/rebuilt several trucks in the last 28 years and have a general ideal of what it takes and how long. I am estimating $50,000.00 for all the new parts and labor to change everything over to the heavy specs. It will take a little shopping and me traveling to get the parts,But that is minor compared to what I will wind up with when it is done. Just my opinion,Always looking for serious opinions and ideals,Not so much the smart ones or the slurs about my needs. Every one has different needs and wants and based on my business and personel needs these are mine.Thank you all for commenting and trying to hepl,I appreciate it. Robert

have a t-600 kw 144" sleeper....the lower part of the truck has a Detroit 60 series, and an auto 10 speed trans.--14, 000 front axle and 45,000 rears. I know you want something bigger for the tractor, however the sleeper is top of the line...Has an upper bunk queen size bed, tv, in-motion satellite dish, shower,
commode, ref./ freezer, dining area that will convert into a double bed. Has a back door, onan generator, (only 4700 hr.)..Tractor has 1,596,000 mi on it. In-frame, trans. re-built, front end kings, etc. just done in the last six months....Excellent maintenance since custom built for husband/wife team. Better than the new tractors in many ways...also, the cabinets are amish built in the inside.....all wood, no glue, perfect fits as new last week.....You may not be interested, but just thought it may give you another option to pursue your interests. The original owners retired approx. 3 mo. ago because of medical issues...I bought the tractor because the original owner is a close personal friend of mine...Truck is still setting until I change companies and hook it on with someone else, or sell it....! Selling price is $57,500. If interested contact me via e-mail..... happytrucker60@hotmail.com

I think you should really try to find someone who is actually doing the kind of work you are thinking about, take him, his wife, and yours out for dinner. Bring a note pad and ask him a lot of questions, write the answers down! Then tell him what you are planning and how you want to do it. Make sure your wife is listening closely when he replies, take notes on what he tells you! Don't interrupt and pay attention, once again, take notes, he has experience after all and it is valuable. When the evening is over go home and enjoy your wife's company. Then the following morning, read the notes you took. Discuss what you learned with your wife. Listen closely to what she may have learned that you did not. Then and only then, reevaluate your plan to do this type of work.

The truck you want to put in front of the trailer you want, and then to bounce around at 80mph empty...the whole project is incompatable!

i just spared you having to take your wife, my wife and me out for dinner! Feel free to ignore my comments, as I'm just a guy that's doing the type of work you wish to do. I have several mentors that have been doing this work for much longer than me, and I'm NOT a rookie. One of them is proof reading this post now before I post it. I'm assuming his smile means he approves of his grasshoppers response...take it or leave it, up to you...if you would like to have that in depth conversation face to face over dinner, I'm offering...

Robert, dude you not only dream...you are dreaming in TECHNICOLOR...for you young guys that's Blu-Ray Hi-Def 3D IMAX!
