If we’re talking conventional headlight bulbs (not LEDs), they are prone to have more or less the same life expectancy if they were changed out at the same time from the same batch.
And real cold weather is where they are apt to burn out when switching on. If you must drive in real cold weather with only one headlight, it may be better to leave it on whenever you stop
I always recommend changing them out as a pair whenever one goes out. Use like brand/model bulbs. Pull your “emergency bulb” back out once you can buy a set and retain this as an emergency bulb in it’s original package for safe keepingLast edited: Jan 26, 2019

2) i would have never left the yard.
3) i always have spare lights in my briefcase
4) i have had lights go out on me during my route, i keep going.
5) one time i had a headlight go out, and i parked until daytime, i was too scared to get out in the dark and change it.
6) i was afraid some deer would sexually assault me...kemosabi49, intrepidor, IluvCATS and 2 others Thank this. -

The oil residue from your fingers will cause the new one to burn out quicker.
I would recommend that you go ahead and replace both. -
Speak of the devil. I got one out. Too cold to change now. Gonna take my chances till dark. Lol
