I would like to point out that declining dispatched loads is decidedly not money hungry. I've only done it once, and that was because there is a 65' restriction on the 101 with a bear on each end.

I was between 12,000 and 12,500. They pulled me in wb94. The officer, whom I quoted said "your weights are good". But he also said my logbook was good, even though I was 15 minutes over on my 14! He was looking for a form and function violation. When he saw it wasn't there, he stopped looking.

Most schools/companies preach 12, 34, 34 and don't go into any exceptions or bother to explain any other way to get to 80k gross. Especially starter companies. There are a lot of drivers that would never believe you if you told them 20k on the steers is legal.

I think they do this because some idiot would high tail it down a state highway in Indiana or wherever running 20k on 12k rated axles and tires and on a 12k weight limited road to boot.

If they tell people 12k they don't have to worry too much about the morons that think they know too much. Other than whatever state it is, South Dakota maybe, with 11k limits on state highways.

There is a long thread on here too somewhere pointing out that you can be over 400 pounds on an axle set or on gross if you have a working APU. If that applies to you then you can roll on with those weights too.
