Plenty of the threads talk(mostly argue) about learning on auto. They don't start off about learning on them, but like everything at TTR, the thread ends up being about something else by the end. There were two schools at the DMV that had autos only when I took my driving test.

    well that isnt my experience
and i cant disagree everyone needs to know how to shift
I complained about the schools teaching my kids to drive
    that only taught on auto
they never got a car from me until they could drive a standard

I did the exact same thing with both of my boys.......I told them that when they had mastered a manual trans. I would take them to get their license. The way I think by doing that , I may have saved their lives in an emergency situation....NEVER know....

It's sad now days even for the 4 wheeled world no body seems to train on a stick. It was 9 years ago when I got my regular license and when I took the road test my exiamer told me I was only the 2nd person to take the test in a stick in his 20 years of being a exiamer.

I always thought the same thing as the OP.Many newbys wants a company with an autoshift but not thinking ahead.Suppose it does'nt work out with that company then guess what, unless you find another autoshift company, you're going to have to get retrained how to shift. Also one day the auto tranny is going to become a thing of the past.

we live in a society that 4x4's are no longer standard transmissions

we dont even call them 4x4's anymore, they are SUV's

so soon a stick will go the way of the horse and buggy

It is. Before I moved here from North Carolina, I worked on the side for a company in Raleigh called Safe Ride Home. Basically, it was a designated driver service - instead of going to the bar, having to take a cab back home, then coming back for your car the next day, we'd take you home in your car, and that would take the risk of getting a DUI/DWAI off the table. They mostly hired college kids, but they did have some older people also. A lot of the younger guys didn't know how to drive a standard, so they'd get to the customer, realize they wouldn't be able to drive that vehicle, then someone like me or someone else who did know would have to hustle to their location.
Which didn't bother me so much, since it was more money in my pocket at the end of it.

it really isn't fair to think as old as I am that I might forget how to shift just because I am driving a standard at the moment

i have reread all the auto threads and I dont see ppl being trained on autos
I recruit at schools and have yet to see an auto at any of 30 schools I have been to

Don't really know a whole lot about the various schools, so I can't say whether or not there are any which train on autos. One thing which did strike me as a bit curious, though... there was a time when I was looking at getting a passenger endorsement, and one of the community colleges I went to in order to inquire about this used old Freightliner COEs which had previously belonged to Consolidated for their training, and those had a seven speed synchronized transmission in them.
