If I recall the "stab" braking method is for trucks without ABS making a sudden stop to prevent locking up the axles and going into a skid...you shouldn't use stab braking for ABS equipped trucks.
You apply a light to moderate amount of pressure to the brake pedal for a few seconds or enough to reduce speed by 3-5 mph. then get off the brake and give the air a few seconds to cool them...they shouldn't overheat this way provided you are descending the grade correctly in the right gear etc.

I burned up my brakes doing 10 mph in second gear down a 8% mountain pass. (ski resort ).
We were told when the job first started, NO JAKES ALLOWED. I was the only one stupid to follow that command. And only did it the FIRST trip down. From there on out. Jakes were used.

I'm calling BS on this one. I did a lot of times.

Learn how to drive the truck, you seem to think it bs but it works.

Here is a thread you need to read -

:biggrin_2555::biggrin_2555:Back in 97 , before I got my Cdl, I was driving a 15 passenger van up to Cleveland from Florida for a kungfu tournament. Had 13 passengers plus equipment going north on I 75 I believe somewhere in Kentucky. Wind up on 6% downgrade that I started on at 55. Was snubbing my brakes felt them fading . Then the DOT planners , in thier infinite wisdom decided it would be a good idea to funnel 3 lanes down to one in the center. And use concrete barriers to do it. So I guide in the center lane and prayed as I shot the thread through the eye of the needle. There was a nice bump as the pave ment changed from smooth asphalt to construction patch work. That could have been a nasty ending. I hit that patch about 70. Hands frozen at the wheel my shifu asks me " you ok?" I could just shake my head yes. By my calculation I was hauling about a ton and a half of man meat. In a six ton van.

That's how I learned about downgrades. Never again!
